Lesson Plan: BLOGGING IN THE CLASSROOM

I.

Grade Level: 5th

Subject: Language Arts

Content and Standards: ELACCKRF1-4: Demonstrate understanding of the


organization and basic features of print. ELACCKW6: With guidance and support
from adults, explore a variety of
digital tools to produce and publish
writing, including in collaboration with
peers. ELACCKL1-6: Demonstrate
command of the conventions of
Standard English grammar and
usage when writing or speaking.

II.

Prerequisites: Students should have


a basic understanding of what a diary of journal is.

III.

Essential Question: Can students assume the persona of a real or imagined


classroom pet and write a blog describing daily activities in the classroom?

IV.

Instructional Objective: Students will:


a. Understand how blogging will grow their vocabulary and writing skills
b. Develop and understanding for others point of view
c.

Understand what it means to be engaged in a concept that prompts a higher


level of critical thinking, thereby resulting in substantive writing.

d. Understand collaborative learning


V.

Instructional Procedures:
a. Lead the class in publishing a blog. Use Microsoft Word, Publisher, etc., to
complete the blog by using simple word processing and invented spellings with
teacher assistance as needed. Students will be asked to imagine they are going
to write a blog entry for yesterdays class. What would they include? Teacher
will write appropriate ideas on a blackboard, whiteboard, or teacher computer
(with a projector or TV monitor attached).
b. Before: The students will be told that what is written could be written as a blog
entry, except they arent going to write their own classroom blog. The students

will be told their blog is going to be written by their classroom pet hamster.
Students will then be asked to look back at the ideas on the board and imagine
how the pet hamster would have written the blog entry. For example, they will be
asked to imagine if there was a fire drill, the class hamster might write, All of a
sudden, a large siren sounded and everyone left the room. I was scared and
didnt know what was happening, but they came back quickly and I knew
everything was okay.
c.

During: The students will understand by writing the blog from the pets
viewpoint, a number of issues will be addressed:
Concerns over students online safety and privacy are lessened because
no names are identified since the blog entries are signed by the pet
hamster, e.g., Prince the Hamster.
Upper elementary students can learn about point of view.
The focus is shifted from the mundane to the unique by engaging
students and hopefully prompting a higher level of critical thinking,
thereby resulting in substantive writing. To make sure students
understand the blogging concept, they will silently write todays entry
from the viewpoint of their classroom pet hamster. After which each
students work will be collected and reviewed to ensure everyone
understands the assignment: to write about the days events from the
point of view of the classroom pet hamster.

Once the students understand how to write the entries, the blog will be
created. The students will take turns daily posting to the blog with
guidance if needed.

d. After: Students will view their blog daily, either on a projector/TV monitor or on a
classroom computer. The URL will also be sent home so parents can see the
class blog created, along with a letter to ensure parents that safety and privacy
issues have been addressed.

Student access to a word processing program

Student access to the internet

Assessment/Evaluation: The students will be accessed on their ability to:
a. Timely submit a written post
b. Describe a classroom event from the viewpoint of their classroom pet
c.

Use school appropriate language and subject matter

Differentiation: Individualized Activities: For older students, more requirements


may be set, such as paragraph length or grammatical expectations.

IX.

Technology: A word processor will be used to type the students entries. The
internet will be used to publish the students entries via a classroom blog.

X.

Self-Assessment: To determine the success of my social media plan, the students


ability to summarize classroom activities through descriptive writing, submit written
work on a timely basis, and their ability to write under the persona of a real or
imagined pet will be reviewed to determine if the instructional outcome of the lesson
were met. Additionally, the students timely submission of a written post, their
description of classroom events from the viewpoint of a pet and their ability to use
school appropriate language and subject matter will also be reviewed to determine if
this lesson needs to be changed and/or enhanced for current, ongoing, and for future
lesson to improve the learning potential for the students.
