Lesson Plan 1
First Grade
Mrs. Bugher
The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis
Subject/Topic:
Read aloud/Writing
Rationale:
We want to conduct this lesson so that the students can recognize rhyming words
throughout the book. Based on the rhyming words they notice, students can create
their own list of rhyming words in their writing logs from a set of words on the list
we create as a class.
Standards:
Objective:
Students will be able to identify rhyming words throughout the story and create a
class list of these rhyming words as well as a list on their own.
Materials:
-The Runaway Pumpkin by Kevin Lewis
-Writing logs
-Pencil
Procedure:
Engagement/Anticipatory Set:
Boy and girls, today were going to read The Runaway Pumpkin. Have any
of you ever read this book before? (Wait for answer) We want you to pay
close attention to any rhyming words you hear throughout the book. (Begin
to read book).
Mentor teach and model:
Read the book to the class and stop after each page to ask students what
rhyming words they noticed. Then well call on students to hear the words
they remembered and make a list of rhyming words on board.
-After page 1, Did anyone notice any words that rhymed so far? (Wait for
answer) (Write correct answer on board and start class list) Repeat after
each page.
Guided Practice:
As a class, make a list of the rhyming words used throughout the book.
Independent Application:

Students will choose 2-3 sets of rhyming words and make their own list of 3
other words that rhyme with them in their writing logs.
-After we finish reading the book. Friends, now we want you to choose 2
rhyming words from the list we made here and make your own list in your
writing logs of 3 other words that rhyme with whatever words you choose.
You have to try rhyming with 2 words from this list and you must think of at
least 3 rhyming words that rhyme with the word you pick, no less.
Closure:
Pick three students to share their list of rhyming words with the class and
have other students listening and making connections if they used the same
words.
Would anyone like to share the list of rhyming words they made with the
class? (Choose 3 volunteers)
Assessment:
We will assess the students by the lists of words they come up with on their own
based on the list we made as a class of the rhyming words they found throughout the
story. We will also assess student comprehension by the quality of their responses to the
questioning and discussion about the sequence of events in the story their ability to
discuss/explain the cause and effect of the events in the story.
Differentiation:
There will be a variety of rhyming words that the students can choose from on the
list we make as a class. Students can pick whether they want a difficult or easier set
of words to make their own list. Some student may need to be guided in a different
direction then a word they may choose based on their level. Most students in the
class can be challenged so we would encourage them to try a hard word on the list.
We could also make the list in a certain order which would seem random to them
but we would put it in an order of easiest or hardest rhyming words.
