Concept
Within the Work Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock there is a history lesson. This piece
screams Renaissance, so the targeted concept is naturally The Renaissance in relation to
the music, and the historical milestones happening during the Renaissance era.
Learning Goals
By the end of the unit, you should be able to:
1. Play Capriol Suite with correct bowings, articulations, intonation, and
phrasing.
2. Understand the history of the suite and all that it entails
3. Define all of the musical terms presented in the piece
4. Define all of the bowings presented within the piece
Historical Notes on The Capriol Suite
The Capriol Suite is a set of dances that is written in the Renaissance style. The origins
of the piece come from a manual written by Jehan Tabourout titled Orchesographie.
Capriol Suite is not considered an arrangement but rather an original composition. The
piece is divided up into six movements the first Basse Danse, is a lively dance. The
Pavanne is stately and slowly paced. The third Tordion is similar to the mood of the first
movement. The Bransles is a fast dance, which continually builds. The Pieds en lair
was named contrary to the other movements, it was named for how it should be
performed not after the actual dance, when the feet should dance so gently that they
barely touch the floor. Mattachins the final movement is a sword dance, which is danced
by four men in combat. The entire suite is about 10 minutes in length.

The Renaissance
Renaissance literally means Rebirth. The Renaissance occurred between the medieval
period and the Baroque era from about 1450-1600. Its origins are in Italy but it spread
quickly to the rest of Europe. It was a movement away from the Church and Medieval
ways and into new art forms. Most of these new art forms were found in sculpture,
philosophy, and Greek literature. Even though Greek culture was a huge inspiration for
most of the art forms within the Renaissance, there is nothing Greek about the music of
the Renaissance.
