Unit 3.5
Special Effects

Math This week we worked on the meaning of fractions, how they

relate to division, how to convert from mixed to improper and vice versa, how to create equivalent fractions, and how to compare and order
fractions and mixed numbers. It was a full week of fractions. We will
be finishing up the unit next week and then testing the following Tuesday.

Reading

Next week we will finish our novel study of The Last Holiday Concert by Andrew Clements. The students are really enjoying
the book, and Im loving the discussions! There will be an end of novel
test next Friday which will cover vocabulary from the book as well as
multiple choice and essay comprehension questions.

Grammar Next week we will continue working on adverbs.

Writing This week students presented their debates. We had a
great time debating out the controversial topics. They really did a
nice job of supporting their arguments with evidence. Next week we
will work on our editing/revising skills as well as analyzing standardized testing essays to discover what it takes to get top scores on
ISTEP.

Spelling Next weeks words all contain prefixes of either de-, dis-, or
un-. This will help out a little with studying, but there are still some
tricky words to memorize. Start practicing early!!!

Social Studies Next week we will begin and finish our next chapter
(its a short one) on the New England Colonies. Students will be taking
notes in class while we read and are allowed to use these notes on the
test.

Science This week we learned about states of matter. Students

learned that mass never changes even if the states of matter changes. Next week we will explore physical and chemical changes in matter.

Note From the Teacher:

Today I sent home reminders for parents who signed up at the beginning of the school year to
provide treats for our winter party. Please be on the lookout for those. Our party will have to be a
morning breakfast party since our schedule will not allow for an afternoon party that day. Also, I
will be sending home a letter that explains our gift exchange that we do during our class party.
Dont worry...Ive designed it so it is simple and cheap! If you should have difficulty providing the
requested items, please let me know ASAP so I might help out.
We only have two more weeks left in the grading period. Oh how the time flies! Next week will be
the last Reading, Spelling, Math, and Social Studies test of the nine weeks. Encourage your students
to finish strong! Ive been doing the same at school.
Ive been having a lot of issues with students not turning homework in daily. PLEASE check
with your child to ensure they are doing their homework nightly. You can verify what homework
there is through the homework hotline, your students agenda, and our classroom website. Please
help me to reinforce the importance of accountability and responsibility with ones work.
