Physical Education Instructional Lesson Plan

Unit Cardio

Grade 4-6

Lesson Activity: Track Lesson # 1 Total # in Unit:

Instructional Objectives (Skill Condition Criteria)

-Complete three laps on the track independently
-Complete a relay race on the track
-Show students that physical movement throughout the day can be
measured with the use a pedometer
Cognitive (Know)
Students will know to stay in their lane when running on the track
during the practice drills and relay race. Students will know how
many steps they took during the class when evaluating their
pedometers during closure.
Psychomotor (Does)
Students will be able to successfully run at least a half mile at a
running pace comfortable for them during practice drill number
two. Students will be able to complete a relay race with their
classmates. Students will wear pedometers throughout the class
without shaking them for an accurate count of how many steps
they took by the end of class.
Affective (Values)- Students will understand that there are
different types of running events that can be performed on a track
when explaining the relay race as the culminating activity. As well
as being able to see that activity throughout the day can be
measured including running and walking when wearing a
pedometer.

Assessment item
Guide-wire
Check list
A guide-wire can be set up on a track or in a gym. The rope must
be pulled taught and attached to an eye-hook in a gym, or attached
to short poles outside; a carabiner, key ring, or 4 inch PVC tube
can be placed around the rope so the child does not have to hold
directly onto the rope. There must be a warning knot at least 2 feet
from the end so the child does not run into the wall or the end
poles.Advantages. (A) A child can run whenever they desire. (B)
Running gait can be efficient with almost full arm swing with both
arms. (C) The child can run in relays, and perform locomotor skills
independently beside sighted peers.
Bright colored tape may be placed on the track in a designated lane
for visually impaired students

the track

5-10 min

Game/Activity
-Relay Race

-Students will independently run on their own on the track

-Students will complete two laps at a running pace that is
comfortable for them.
-Students will be placed in groups of 5 or 6
-Groups will then be placed in lanes (Visually impaired
student must be in the lane that has the guide-wire. Most
likely the inside lane)
-Students will then be placed in various spots throughout
their lane(check points)
-Each group will be given a baton that they must hand off at
the check point they run to.
-A student will run from their check point to the next one that
follows and then stops.
-Once the baton is handed to the last check point, that student
must run it to where the first check point started.

2-3 min

Closure

-Have students take off their pedometers and see how many
steps they took throughout the class
-Review that anyone can walk or run at their own pace on a
track or use a pedometer to measure how many steps or how
much activity they do throughout the day
-When running on a track we want to communicate to people
especially if we are in the same lane and want to pass them,
or if we are about the hand them off a baton
-If students really enjoyed running and performing the relay
discuss how they can join an outside track league or they can
always run on their free time with an adult.

-Class will be seated in a group
