BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER

Borderline personality disorder is a mental illness which is caused by behavior, selfimage and mood swings. Even though the cause is still unknown researchers studies shows that
environment and genetic factors might play a role is BPD. Studies show that many, but not all
report to have a history of abuse, or neglect as young children, and are more likely to be a victim
of rape or violence. Although there are more personality disorders BPD is a more common
disorder especially in young women (Borderline Personality Disorder, 2006). People who have
personality disorders do not admit it. They do not think they have anything wrong with them,
they feel normal like everyone else. Having a disorder is hard to deal with especially when you
havent been diagnosed yet. If you try to get them help they will automatically think you are
calling them crazy, trying to get them help wont be easy. People who are diagnosed with BPD
are highly sensitive to rejection. They will often ask friends or family members to do things for
them so they wont have the fear of rejection. Seeing someone else get rejected makes them feel
less rejected and have more confidence of themselves. When they get rejected they feel useless
in the world like they dont deserve to be here. They will avoid all types of rejections if
necessary so they wont get that horrible feeling.
Before BPD was discovered, it would overlap with schizophrenia and many other
disorders, BPD was commonly believed to be a wastebasket diagnosis. Lacking in diagnostic
precision and validity (History of the Disorder, 2012) People who didnt fall into other disorder
categories usually had BPD. Since there was no information on how to treat it or how it was
caused there was very poorly treatment for it. Having to tell a patient they have BPD and having
unanswered questions about the diagnosis can be kind of scary. Not being able to provide details
or how to deal with the illness to your patient. Over the years we have collected more
information about BPD, now we can explain patients what exactly it is and how it can be treated.

BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER

Some of the symptoms that you can encounter from BPD are very intense emotions that
come and go, binge eating, unsafe sex, or other self-harmful behavior such as suicide or ilicit
drugs (Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms and Effects, 2005). These symptoms come
and go frequently, they may last hours before it begins to wear off. Having BPD is usually hard
for someone to feel secure about themselves, they feel lost or having the feeling like they dont
belong here. When you feel insecure about yourself you lose all interest. All the goals, jobs and
relationships will have a huge impact due to the disorder, your goals will be held on hold. If you
notice someone in your family or friends with the symptoms make sure they get help one way or
another. Even though there is no cure for BPD, treatment is available. A lot of people may think
it will get better overtime but thats not always the case. It may get worse than it already is. Like
I said earlier the people with BPD will not feel any different from others, they feel like they fit in
in reality. They do not see the rapid mood swings or behaviors that occur within them. To them
its like any other normal day.
There are several ways they can be treated, talking with a doctor will help you figure out
what is the best treatment for you. Taking talk therapies is one great way to deal with BPD.
There are several talk therapies that you can take, you can try all of them and see which one suits
you the best. You can also get medication to help re-occurring clinical problems such as
depression, anxiety, ect. Prescription does need to be medicated appropriately by your doctor,
regular check-ups are required. If BPD gets too out of hand, hospitalization might be the option
for you. Psychiatric hospital will help you from self-harming yourself; they will keep a good eye
on you from committing suicide. Getting all the experienced medical help is very important in
order to succeed from BPD (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2012).
