Anderson, Per-Pinstrup. Shioler, Ebbe. (2001) Seeds of contention: world hunger and the
global controversy over GM crops. Baltimore, Maryland. The Johns Hopkins University
Press.
Thesis
The two authors, Per-Pinstrup Anderson and Ebbe Shioler are analyzing the use
of
genetically modified (GM) foods in ending world hunger while passing through
the
sugar coated reporting of the GM products.
Summary
There is criticism towards some journalism and world news issue that the
reporting companies are only reporting what they think would make a good
story
but not things that should be really brought to the publics attention such as a
childs death no one had heard about due to malnourishment and disease over
the extinction of a breed of butterfly. This book, Seeds of Contention, touches
many subjects about the effects GM products can have on people and the
environment but mainly if it is going to cause more harm than good.
Point of View
The Point of view of the two authors Per-Pinstrup Anderson and Ebbe Shioler is
seeing past what we see on the mainstream about world hunger and laying out
in
detail the pros and cons of GM products for the general product to build their
own
point of view.

experienced crop failure have helped benefit those in poverty and have created
better environments and ecosystems.
Summary
The climate smart agriculture system promotes the plants to create carbon
creating more carbon in the plants and in the ground. The climate smart
agriculture system creates a solution to the effect crop failure has had in most
parts of the world. Small farms are being established and there has been an
increase in the food available to the communities that participate in the climate
smart agriculture system.
Point of View
The point of view that is being expressed is that there is hope to ending world
hunger across the globe. The climate smart agriculture system wants people to
see that if humanity can participate in the practice of climate smart agriculture
and create small farms that cohere to different environments then a positive
change against world hunger can be accomplished.

Thesis
There are many things contributing to the hunger issue around the world,
including topics such as the unnecessary demand for certain foods rising, such as
meat and dairy. Other crops such corn, wheat, and rice are needed to meet this
demand but are being effected by current climate change. To help farmers adapt
organizations, such as Feed the Future are teaching farmers smarter ways to
crop.
These organizations are also focusing on nourishing women to keep their
strengths in order to take care of their children.
Summary
In the article it says that there is a demand for more meat and dairy and also that
it is not necessary. Food is taken for granted incessantly, especially in the United
States. The demand for meat and dairy products is high. To meet these
demands,
corn, wheat, and rice crops are crucial to the production of meat and dairy
products because they are needed to feed and nourish the animals. More crops
are being cultivated for these grain crops but because of major climate change
occurring around the globe crops are failing. Farmers are being educated in more
efficient ways of farming by a system called Feed the Future. A system that is a
branch off of Feed the Future is called the U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID) focuses on empowering woman and helping them live
healthier lives so that they can raise stronger and healthier children.
Point of View
The point of view is that the food production system has flaws and smarter

to adapt to changing environments.

Half the worlds food is wasted specially in the west. (2013 May, 3). YouTube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWERQ4elsvE
Thesis
The western states and some parts of Europe consume more food than what is
necessary. The excess food could then be used to feed the many hungry in
deprived areas of the world, but people continue to waste food as if there was
no
effect of it.
Summary
Most of the food that is thrown away is because it is deformed, meaning it isnt
shaped perfectly. These could be used to feed the malnourished that desperately
need the nutrition. Most of the food is being thrown away by consumers as well
as farmers. Most people have more food than what is necessary that then gets
thrown out, when that food could be conserved for those that are hungry and
dont have the means to get access to food. Deaths caused by obesity are second
in line after deaths caused by smoking. The consumption of food is out of control
and the humans living in poverty are experiencing the negative effects of it.
Point of View
The speakers point of view is the humans are consuming more than what is

necessary and throwing away food that could be salvaged are the causes of the
continuation of famine in the world.
Questions
1. What is the state of world hunger and what is the publics opinion on the
issue?
M. L Perry, C.Rosenzweig, A. Iglesias, M. Livermore, G. Fischer. (2004) Effects of climate
change on global food production under SRES emissions and socio-economic scaenarios.
[Global Environmental Change, 14(1)] DOI: 10.1016/j.gloenvcha.2003.10.008
Thesis
Solving world hunger calls for a sensitive way of thinking and everyone and
everything needs to be taken into consideration in order for a solution to
actually
have effect on ending this never ending issue.
Summary
In the article, the lack of food is not so much the issue causing famine. It is more
so addressing that famine can be caused by various reasons and pushes to study
the different causes and work towards eliminating world hunger based on those
specific issues. Also, as said in the article, the goal of public action should be to
expand human capabilities; this encourages better education and empowerment
among all people.
Point of View
The point of view is seeing world hunger as a much more complex issue that
needs
different approaches depending on the cause of a certain famine taking place.
Questions
2. Are there issues that cause world hunger, if so, in what ways might those
issues contribute to the matter?
3. Could world hunger cause long term effects on people and the Earth? If so,
then what sort of effects?

Quinn, Daniel. (1998, April 22) [Reaching for the future with all three hands]
http://www.ishmael.org/Education/Writings/kentstate.cfm
Thesis
The issue of world hunger opens the doors to the issues with humanity. Daniel
Quinn discusses how the ideas people have for solving world hunger, even with
good intentions, may be leading the future of this world to destruction. Quinn
talks about having a different point of view on the issue and uses, what he calls,
our third hand.
Summary
Daniel Quinn touches the subjects of food over production and how it relates to
the rapid growth of the population that is contributing to world hunger. Quinn
talks about taking action. He compares world hunger to the arms race, having no
end and only growing until someone puts a stop to it.
Point of View
What Quinn is trying to get across is that people need to analyze the issue
carefully, plan out a solution and then fulfill it.
Questions
1. Are there issues that cause world hunger, if so, in what ways might those
issues contribute to the matter?
2. Are people trying to eliminate world hunger and, if so, how might that be
fulfilled?
Weiss, R. Kenneth. (2012, July 22.) As the worlds population grows, hunger
persists on a massive scale. Los Angeles Times.
Thesis
World hunger is a result of numerous things such as war, poverty, and large
numbered families, with it brings famine, disease and death that some are
trying
to extinguish, but without the cooperation from the people in danger and the

commitment from the more fortunate, the matter will continue as it as.
Summary
The newspaper article focuses on a camp in Dadaab, Kenya that is packed with
people searching for not only food, but for health services (mostly for children),
for shelter and supply for crops, even though the climate change has caused dry
area and growing healthy crops have become more difficult. The people do not
see a problem with the large families but it affects them greatly. Not having the
means to support large families is the biggest issue because these children arent
being fed creating all these famished children.
Point of View
The writer is mostly portraying facts, but Weiss is also showing that people are
oblivious to why famine and poverty ae present in the lives of the people seeking
refuge in Dadaab, Kenya and why famine has perished lands, mostly of Africa.
