St.

Peter's Square, Vatican City

The Piazza of St Peter's was built by Bernini for Pope Alexander VII in 1656-67. It was conceived as a grand
approach to the church but had to be planned so that the greatest number of people could see the Pope give
his blessing, either from the middle of the facade of the church or from a window in the Vatican Palace.

ACADEMY OF ATHENS, GREECE

The Academy of Athens is Greece's national


academy, and the highest research establishment
in the country. It was established in 1926, and
operates under the supervision of the Ministry of
Education. The main building of the Academy is
a neoclassical building
between Panepistimiou
Street and Akadimias Street in the centre of
Athens. The building was designed as part of an
architectural "trilogy" in 1859 by the Danish
architect Theophil Hansen, along The Greek neoclassical sculptor Leonidas Drosis sculpted the
principle multi-figure pediment sculpture, on the
theme of the birth of Athena, based on a design by
painter Carl Rahl.
