Review of Multi-Digit Subtraction and Multiplication

Teaching Methods, Procedures & Activities

Strategies Used:

1) Do two review problems of each kind on the board together- multi-digit subtraction and 2 digit by 1
digit multiplication
2) Introduce educreations on the iPad
3) Explain to students that this is a way that I can assess their learning and make sure they truly can
explain their work
4) Students will record themselves solving a problem both verbally and written, it will be in a video
format using educreations
5) Introduce the procedure: First start a new document, then write the problem on the document,
when you have done that, press the microphone and begin recording yourself, you should talk and
write at the same time, explain why you are doing what you are doing, finally when finished, write
and say the answer
6) Explain to students that their explaining is the most important part, they need to say everything
they are doing and why they are doing it
7) Do a practice subtraction problem and show the student exactly what I am looking for
8) Play the recording for them- talk about what I did and how I explained my though process through
the entire problem
9) Clarify any questions they may have
10) Give them the problem I want them to record (876-497=)
11) Give them each an iPad and send them to different parts of the room to record themselves
12) When they are finished, they should come back to the table we are working at and we will listen to
each students recording and make sure they explained their thinking and got the problem correct
13) If time allows, have student record themselves doing a two digit and one digit multiplication
problem using the same exact procedure

-Reflection/Response on learning
-Electronic Whiteboard
-Explaining Thinking
Assessment: Students explanation and
writing on educreations after lesson.
Were students able to correctly
explain the process of answering the
problem and get the correct answer?

Differentiated InstructionSpecial

Cross Curricula Connections:

Education Students: This is a special education classroom. If students were non verbal or had a speech
goal, it would be ok to just solve the problem through writing on educreations

This exit ticket on educreations could be

for any subject. In social studies or science
they could draw a diagram and explain
what the diagram represents. For reading,
they could read a story aloud and record it
on educreations, or answer
comprehension questions verbally instead
of paper and pencil .

ESL Students: Again, the student might not be able to verbally explain their thinking, so they could just
write out the steps they took to get the answer
Gifted and Talented students: Use their ticket out the door as a way to teach other students- challenge
them to verbally explain all their thinking rather than just explaining their steps, or challenge them to
explain two or three different ways to find the answer
21st Century Skills/Standards Addressed: See Blackboard for your grade level technology 21st century
standards
Utilize digital tools and resources to investigate real-world issues, answer questions, or solve problems

Notes: Eventually this could be used as a

ticket out the door once students get the
procedure down and can use the
technology very quickly

Create a plan or process that utilizes digital tools and resources to investigate and answer issues,
questions, or problems
