2 pieces of large construction paper

Prior to Lesson:
Tape all the different puzzle pieces around the room.

At the top of the other poster write What we would like to learn about hearing and sound\

Introduction:

3 min

On Monday you all wrote your animal unit test. So that means that we are moving on to our next unit. We will be doing a
little activity to figure out what it is. If you already know, that is ok, just keep it to yourself. You can still help your team
figure out what it is!

Groupings:
Whole class

Time:
20 Min.

Groupings:
6 groups
(2 groups of 4
and 4 groups
of 3 if
everyone is
here)

Time:
20min

Lesson:
Tell student we will not begin until all the instructions are out and everyones questions are
answered.
Students will be divided into 6 teams. They are all ninjas! What are ninjas known for? Being silent
as they move around! So you are not allowed to talk while you are out searching for your piece.
The only time that you are able to talk is when everyone is your has a hand on your home base
(your coloured piece of paper.)
One at a time someone will go out from your group to collect a single puzzle piece from around the
room that matches your home base colour. Your objective is to get all 10 of your puzzle pieces
and fit them together to create the tittle page of what your new unit will be.
Ask students to repeat instructions back. Write rules on the board.
1. Only one ninja from each team out a time
2. Ninjas may only grab one puzzle piece at a time and it must be their colour
3. Ninjas can only talk when all of their teams hands are on home base at the same time.
Ask students to help you come up with the consequences if they broke any of the rules.

Groupings:
Whole class

Hand out new science booklet that has the KWL chart in it. Ask student if they know what a KWL
chart is? Well we will be filling out 2 portions of the chart now and 1 at the end of the unit.
Bring up the first poster (what we already know). Ask the students what they already know about
hearing and sound and write the ideas down on the poster. Have the students write down the
same ideas on to their K portion of the KWL sheet.
Repeat process for what we want to know.
Time:
Min.
7
Groupings:
Class/
Individual

Reflection:

Extension / Wrap-up:
Once students are done writing, they may put the whole booklet in their science duotangs.
Remind students that we will be writing the L at the end of the unit since it represents what we
have learned.
