Johnson, Christopher G. (2009). Transforming Education: Enabling
Learning for All Arizona Students. The Arizona Long-Range Strategic
Educational Technology Plan. Retrieved from
http://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED507623.pdf
This article includes a good example of a strategic educational technology
plan for Arizona Schools. It states the importance of creating an e-plan for
the future success of our students in our world. The connection between
the article and the plans goals is that it emphasizes teacher and leader
training for the objectives and goals of the plan.
Our administrators and some core teachers have made visits to
neighboring campuses to get some ideas for our technology plan. They
have shared their observations with staff during staff meeting. Their
observation on the best practices has been applied or are planned to be
applied in the next technology plan.

CURRICULUM COMPONENT CRITERIA.

The Plan must establish clear goals and realistic strategy for using
telecommunications and information technology to improve education services.
(Answer at least 4 questions for each subsection below)

Describe teachers' current access to instructional technology and current use of

digital tools.
1. What technology is currently available for teachers?
Teacher notebook system, Intel Pentium Processor, Windows XP,
Projectors, Native SVGA, printers, classroom phones and teacher cell
phones, document cameras.
2. How are hardware and software currently being used in classrooms at
each grade level and in each content area?
In terms of hardware, each classroom computer is connected to the active
directory server, and multi-tasking server that has 2 GB RAM. In terms of
software, each teacher has access to the school database to keep student
personal information, grades and attendance. For academic software, K-2
grades use Go Math Software for Math instruction, Interactive Journeys
for English. ESL students use Reading Eggs. For upper classes, there are
ALEKS, Reasoning Minds and Study Island.
3. How does technology assist with student assessment?
With the help of all the software listed above, students excel in the skills
that are necessary for them to pass their state standardized tests.
4. How does technology assist teachers and principals with their

administrative tasks, attendance and grading?

Database is the biggest help for both teachers and administration tasks.
Administrators are able to keep track of teachers to see if teachers take
attendance regularly, enter grades.
Describe students' current access to instructional technology and current use of
digital tools. Include a description about the LEA policy, practices, and/or
replacement policy that ensures equitable technology access for all students.
1. Is technology currently available to all students?
Yes, each classroom has a class set of student chrome book for 28
students. They have projectors, smart boards, document cameras in their
classrooms. In summary, students benefit from everything that is offered
for teachers.

2. What replacement cycle has been built into the plan; and what funding is
needed to support the replacement policy?
Harmony School of Science has certain policies in regards to use and
replacement policy. When a student chrome book is damaged and needs
to be repaired or replaced. Our policy is to loan a spare device to such
students. If we run out of spare devices to loan out, we hold off on
shipping a damaged device to the insurance if it is still in usable condition,
just until a loaned device comes back. When loaning a spare device to a
student, we have them sign the attached agreement. There are two
important key points when loaning a chrome book:
a. Loaned devices are not sent home with students. They are checked in and out
daily only for in-school use.
b. Loaned devices do not carry the optional theft/vandalism insurance even if
assigned student paid for the optional insurance. (That insurance only stays with
their originally assigned chrome book.)
Describe goals and an implementation plan, with annual activities, for using
technology to improve teaching and learning. Describe how these goals align to
the LEA's curricular goals that are supported by other plans. Describe how the
LEA's budget (LCAP) supports these goals, and whether future funding
proposals or partnerships may be needed for successful implementation.
1. What are the LEAs curriculum goals and plans for assisting students to
meet technology literacy and information skills?
Curriculum goals and plans are provided by central office and are
implemented in computer applications classes in Harmony School
Science. Each grade level has its own list of skills to be covered. The
ultimate goal is to have all student technology literate and equipped with
necessary skills for future life.
2. What LEA adopted curriculum supports the acquisition of technology and
information literacy skills?
Harmony School of Science uses Learning.com curriculum as suggested
by the central office.

Describe goals and an implementation plan, with annual activities, to address

Internet Safety and the appropriate and ethical use of technology in the
classroom.
1. What LEA board policies will be or have been developed to implement
Internet safety instruction?
HSS will be using Firewall to make sure school internet system is free
from attacks and to monitor the internet traffic. Since there are both staff
computers, lab computers and chrome books, we need to make sure to
use two separate Internet sources.

2. How are students using online communication technologies, including but

not limited to social networking and instant messaging?
Every student in HSS will be given an email account from the schools
domain. With this account, students will be able to send messages to their
teachers such as sending assignments and/or communicating with their
friends.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMPONENT
The Plan must have a professional development strategy to ensure that staff
understands how to use these new technologies to improve education services
(Answer at least 4 questions for each subsection below)

Summary of the teachers' and administrators' current technology proficiency and

integration skills and needs for professional development.
1. Are administrators able to support teachers with the integration of
technology into daily curriculum?
HSS Administration is definitely supportive of its teachers for the
integration of technology into daily curriculum. In fact, it is a requirement
by the central office to implement technology in all grade levels and each
class. They are supported by the grants provided the government.
2. What do teachers and administrators consider as their needs for
professional development?
Based on the surveys given to the teachers and administrators, it is stated
that the biggest need for professional development based on technology is
to train them on how to use software mandated by central office, the
educational applications offered by Google, and by devices such as
tablets and chrome books.
Describe goals and an implementation plan, with annual activities, for providing
professional development opportunities based on your LEA needs assessment
data and the Curriculum Component of the plan.
1. How will teachers and administrators be trained and provided on-going
support in the effective integration of technology into curriculum?
Teachers and administrators will be trained during professional
development hours for the newly implemented software and for the new
devices purchased to enhance student learning.
2. What professional learning will be available so teachers and
administrators can make informed decisions using data to meet individual
student academic needs?
HSS and the other schools in the district have data analysts to collect data
and analyze the data for student achievement. They visit schools and give
report to both teachers and administrators on how to read the data
correctly and make informed decision to meet student needs.

INFRASTRUCTURE, HARDWARE, TECHNICAL SUPPORT, SOFTWARE, AND

ASSET MANAGEMENT COMPONENT CRITERIA
The Plan must include an assessment of the telecommunication services,
hardware, software, asset management, and other services that will be needed to
improve education services.
(Answer at least 4 questions for each subsection below)

Describe the existing hardware, Internet access, electronic learning resources,

technical support, and asset management already in the LEA that will be used to
support the Curriculum and Professional Development Components of the plan.
1. What technologies are available to facilitate home/school communication
such as email, web pages, and voice mail?
There is a variety of technologies available for the home/school
connection. HSS has a website to post all the news and information on
events coming up. Also, there is newsletter that has been sent home
every Wednesday. Each parent is given a list of all the email addresses of
the school personnel to reach out whenever there is a need. Parents are
reached out by a voice mail called School Reach to inform about an
upcoming event instantly.
2. What technology access do parents have at home? What technologies do
parents prefer for home/school communication?
Most of the parents of HSS students use a smart phone, have internet
connection at home, use computer. Most parents prefer technologies that
they can check their childs grade with; such as an application called
Harmony App. They check the school website regularly on their
cellphones or on their computers.
Describe the technology hardware, electronic learning resources, networking and
telecommunications infrastructure, physical plant modifications, technical
support, and asset management needed by the LEA's teachers, students, and
administrators to support the activities in the Curriculum and Professional
Development components of the plan.
1. What emerging technologies could be used to implement the plans goal?
At this point, we are planning to combine all the servers in each school
under one umbrella so that teachers can access to all the services
wherever they are. That way we will be able to control all the servers of all
the schools as if they are in one school but in different classrooms. In
short, we are trying to make more efficient use of Windows Active
Directory.

2. Where will the technology be placed to effectively support the Curriculum

and Professional development components?
Technology will be placed within the HSS campus. Some of the items that
we thinking that will support the curriculum and professional development
components are replacing the laptops of all teachers with new ones,
increasing the number of the printers, replacing the projectors that are
older than 3 years, purchasing smart boards for computer, science, math
and ELA classes.
MONITORING AND EVALUATION COMPONENT
The plan must include an evaluation process that enables the school to monitor
progress toward the specific goals and make mid-course corrections in response
to new developments and opportunities as they arise.
(Answer at least 4 questions for each subsection below)

Describe the process for evaluating the plan's overall progress and impact on
teaching and learning.
1. How will the LEA know whether implementation of this plan has made a
positive impact on teaching and learning?
The best indication of this is to look into student test scores both in
campus-tests and state tests. By comparing the scores from the year
before the plan and after the plan, we would be able to see if plan had
made a positive impact.
2. Describe the process to coordinate the individual evaluation component.
Teachers use of the purchased software and having their student use it
will be tallied. Teachers will be asked to reflect their satisfaction or
dissatisfaction to the team leaders, department heads, or coaches at the
end of the year, so that they can be evaluated individually.
Describe the schedule for evaluating the effect of plan implementation, including
a description of the process and frequency of communicating evaluation results
to tech plan stakeholders.
1. How often will data be collected and summarized? Who is responsible?
Data Collection will be done in both campus level and in district level.
Dean of Academics will be in charge of collecting data quarterly for the
school. Data analyst of the district will be in charge of collecting data for
the whole district. It will be summarized by the data analyst.
2. How often will the status of plan implementation be reported to the LEA
superintendent and the stakeholders?
Even though this plan has been created for three years, we will be
reporting annually to the superintendent. It will also be reported annually
for the stakeholders.
