Overview:
Similar to a commentary, a response essay asks you to contribut[e] something new to an
ongoing public conversation, specifically attempting to convince readers to agree with you
and, perhaps, to change their minds (Paine 171). When responding to a specific text, persuasion
is accomplished by
- summarizing (explaining) the text,
- responding to the ideas presented in the text, and
- discussing both the strengths and the weaknesses of the text (including content and/or
rhetorical strategies).
Application:
Choose an opinion article from www.dailyoped.com and write a summary response essay that
includes each of the persuasive components outlined in the Overview above. Use your own
knowledge of the subject matter and the rhetorical triangle, your own personal experiences, and
specific examples from the text (article) to support your response and your discussion of the
texts strengths and weaknesses.

This essay addresses outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5
