QUOTE

EXACTLY
BY: ERICA FERREL, SHAUN AGNO, AND
FAVIOLA AGUIRRE

WHAT IS QUOTE
EXACTLY?
Quote Exactly is when you quote the author of the source
exactly word for word and insert quotation marks to close
the quotation.
The words come precisely from the source and must not
be paraphrased.

It is also known as Verbatim.

THE RULES OF QUOTE

EXACTLY
1.Capture EVERY word
Many have the habit to paraphrase statements to convey the
general idea of what is being said instead of typing out the exact
words. The process is called clean read transcription.

2. Dont leave out non-verbal communication

Communication has a lot of components other than words. Such
as gestures, pauses and etc. Verbatim transcription catches all
these in order to give a true meaning of what is being said.
3. Catch those fillers and false starts
Fillers are the ums, your knows, that are used by speakers to buy
time to think. False starts are sentences that are started but never
completed.
4. Note external sounds
Examples of external sounds can be doors opening, people
walking in, etc. The main idea of verbatim transcription is to catch
both the what and how of the speech.

THE INCORRECT USE

OF QUOTE EXACTLY
In the Madonna's of Echo Park internalized racism is displayed with
most characters in the book. One of these characters is Juan found in
chapter 5 titled Yo Soy El Army. Juan is a minor character in this
chapter who is arguing with his mother Ofelia on who he should date in
terms of race. His mother prefers that he dates someone who is
Hispanic but he wants to date someone that is Asian. Within this
argument Juan displays internalized racism when he states Mom, I
dont like Mexican girls, Juan sighed. You cant change that.
(Skyhorse, 96) In this quotation Juan displays internalized racism by
stating that he does not like Mexican girls when he could of just said he
doesnt like the girl Duchess that his mom preferred. Later in the book
Juan overcomes this internalized racism and marries Angie a Hispanic
not because of her race, but because he loves her.

Here the quote is used incorrectly because it is paraphrased

instead of capturing every word.
