Abstract

Teachers have one of the most important careers in the entire world. They work with the
young minds of our society every day. Teachers have the unique ability to impact the
students that will be running our country in the future. When a teacher is effective,
students learn and the society benefits. As a teacher you create the foundation for your
students that they will continue to build on for the rest of their lives. People should teach
because they want to have a positive influence on the world we live in. They should not
want to teach for money, but for the students. Students need schooling because they need
to be educated for their futures, so that they can be as successful as possible. They also
need schooling because it teaches them many valuable life lessons, such as sharing,
responsibility, and how to interact with people. I learned many skills in school as well as
the workplace that will help me be a teacher. Some of these skills include responsibility,
honesty, punctuality, hard work, dedication, how to work as a team, and motivation. All
of these important aspects I learned have prepared me to be a successful professional
educator.

I have always wanted to be a teacher, I have been telling my parents this since I
was three years old. For many people money is one of the deciding factors in their career,
but for me the satisfaction of inspiring and teaching children is the driving force for my
career path. I love kids, and I want to have an impact on the world I live in. The type of
person who teaches is very special; they are born with a natural craving to help people.
Teaching will satisfy this craving I was born with, and it will provide me with lifelong
satisfaction in my career.
Educational Background
I moved very often growing up due to my fathers job in the United States Post
Office. When someone has to move this much, they must learn how to make friends and
how to adapt to change. I attended fourteen different schools from kindergarten to my
senior year of high school. I used to have a lot of anger towards my parents for making
me move so much, but now I know I learned a lot from these experiences. I have had the
rare opportunity to live in over 7 states. I also learned to grow out of my extremely shy
nature. Making friends is difficult when you are too shy to even tell the class your name.
Eventually, I learned to be more outgoing and make friends quickly. I also saw my fair
share of different schools and teachers. Some were amazing, and others were terrible. I
was always very observant of my teachers because I have always known I wanted to
teach. I have always been a very motivated and dedicated student, because I love school.
I rarely took sick days, and I always got good grades. I took over 22 Advanced Placement

credits in high school, and started college as a sophomore. I have had quite an extensive
educational background, and I am very thankful for the experiences I have been through
because of this.
My extensive education has contributed so much to my development as a
professional educator, and it has encouraged me even more to want to teach. Because I
have been through school, I know what it is like to be a student. This will help me as a
professional to better know how to help my own students. I will know what their thought
processes are, the pressures of being a student, and how to engage them effectively. In my
experiences I also learned motivation, responsibility, and perseverance. This will help me
to stay motivated, as well as to motivate my students and colleagues. Learning
responsibility will help me to be a professional employee, and be trusted to get all of my
work done the way it is supposed to be done. Perseverance will assist me to keep pushing
when I am having a difficult time or when my students are frustrated. Going through
school has encouraged me to want to teach more and more every day. I have seen good
teachers that I want to strive to be like, and bad teachers that I want to make up for in my
own years of teaching. Overall, I have learned many important aspects in my education
so far that will help me to be the best professional educator I can be.
Work History
I have always worked and enjoyed having something to do. I got my first job
when I was eight years old as a waitress. I loved it and have had a steady job ever since. I
loved being challenged and pushed to handle more tasks and more customers. It was after
this summer waitressing job that I discovered my skill for multitasking. I was always
early for work and loved to make money. I also learned that I am a person who likes to
have more than enough to do because I keep myself on track that way. I worked all

through high school and played sports while keeping a 4.0 grade point average. I have
had a lot of experience working for my own money, and it has helped me learn
responsibility, patience, and teamwork; all of these aspects will be helpful to my future as
a teacher.
My work history has contributed to my development as a professional educator
and wanting to teach in many ways. I learned how to handle customer complaints which
will help me handle parent complaints or concerns in a professional and calm manner. I
learned how to be patient with students who do not understand concepts as fast or who
are not listening. I learned punctuality which will help me to always be on time and show
my students to do the same. I learned teamwork which will help me work with my fellow
teachers as a team. Because I have learned and mastered these important aspects, I am
more excited to teach and be challenged. All in all, because I have a lot of work
experience, I am prepared and excited to work as a teacher full time in the most
professional manner.
Service and Extracurricular Activities

As I mentioned I like to have more than enough things on my agenda and this was
no different in high school. I was the team captain of the varsity volleyball team. I played
volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, track, and was in the school band. I was the vice
president of NHS (National Honor Society). In NHS we had to participate in thirty hours
of community service, and I chose to work in an after school program. In this experience
I would help kids with homework, take them to recess, and watch them until their parents
picked them up. It was during this time that

I confirmed my love for teaching and knew I would pursue it as a career. I finished my
thirty hours and was so sad to leave I decided to continue going. I ended up working over
seventy hours with the kids and still visit them when I am home. I love kids, and learned
many essential aspects during my extracurricular activities and services which will help
me become a professional educator to the best of my abilities.
Reasons for Choosing Education as a Career
I have always wanted to be a teacher; my parents even have home videos of me
teaching my sister when I was three years old. I have always considered teaching as my
path. It is not just an option to me, it is the option. I decided to be a teacher because I love
to help people. I want to make a difference in the world I live in, and this is one of the
most rewarding ways to do that. I want to teach students to dream big for their futures,
and to work hard. I want to make school fun and exciting; I want students to want to
learn. I want to teach because it is my passion and my purpose.
Although I have always wanted to teach, I have considered other professions. I
considered a lot of careers in the medical field because I do like to help people. I had a
problem with most of them though; I faint when I see blood. I also considered being a
lawyer, because I am stubborn and love to argue. My problem with this is lying; I am a
terrible liar and would never be convincing enough in this profession. I anticipate many
rewards with teaching, mostly intrinsic rewards, such as wanting children to learn and
contributing to the society. But I will also enjoy the extrinsic rewards that come along
with teaching such as job security, vacations, and holidays off.
Professional Goals

My main short-term goal is to get my associates at the College of Southern Idaho
in elementary education. I want to do this while getting straight As, and applying myself
to the fullest degree. I will obtain these goals by studying hard, and staying focused on
my future. Because I am very determined, I know I will meet these goals and any others
that I set my mind to.
My first long-term goal is to get my Bachelors in elementary education with a
focus area in special education through Idaho State University. Another long-term goal I
have is to find a school I love to teach at and spend my life living my dream. I will
accomplish these goals with hard work and motivation. I will take my ISU courses
through the College of Southern Idaho while working part time. I will teach for eight
years at a Title 1 school and get my loans forgiven. Once I have done this, I will transfer
to a school that I want to spend the rest of my career teaching for. I will accomplish these
goals because I have no other option in my mind.
In conclusion, I have all the education, work, and extracurricular experience I
need to become a professional educator. I have professional goals that will help me to
stay focused and reach my ultimate goal. I cannot wait to pursue my passion for teaching
elementary students, and I continue to become more excited each day.
