Grade Level: Kindergarten

Lesson: Opposites
Unit of Study: Dr. Seuss
Goal of Lesson (Common Core State Standards/Division of Early Childhood where appropriate)
CCSS.ELA.L.K.5- With guidance and support from adults, explore word relationships and nuances in word meanings.
CCSS.ELA.L.K.5.b - Demonstrate understanding of frequently occurring verbs and adjectives by relating them to their
opposites (antonyms).
CCSS.ELA.RL.K.10 - Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.
CCSS.ELA.RF.K.1 - Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
CCSS.ELA.RF.K.1.a - Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page.
Objectives:
SWBAT identify opposite word pairs during guided reading lesson
SWBAT identity starting point when reading a book
Pre-Assessment:
Teacher will assess the students knowledge by asking students to call out the opposite of a word as group
Post-Assessment:
Teacher will assess the students knowledge by reviewing the piece of paper with the list of opposite pairs the student wrote
down
Materials:
Multiple copies of The Foot Book
Pieces of paper
Pencils
Use of Technology:
None

Differentiation:
Up:
Students will be asked to finish sentence by guessing what the opposite pair to the word is
Students will be asked to read more than one page and identify all the opposite pairs they read during their turn
Down:
Students will use magnetic words on magnetic board instead of writing out words
Students will each read a sentence instead of whole page and work together in pairs to identify opposite pairs
Seating Configuration/Use of Physical Space:
The Head teacher will be seated at the horseshoe shaped tabled with a group of 4 students. The rest of the class will be
separated into groups of 4 and each group will be in a different center.
Teaching roles and collaboration:
Head teacher will sit with guided reading group (group of 4 students). Teachers assistants will be circulating class and
assisting the rest f the students located in different centers. Paras will sit with assigned student.
Classroom Management:
Teacher and teachers assistants will give verbal praise to students for desired behavior. When students portrait disrupting
behavior, teacher will address behavior and redirect towards desired behavior.
Engagement of students/anticipatory set/Motivation:
Consistent and appropriate verbal praise to increase/keep desired behaviors, multiple opportunities for students to provide
responses.
Connection to Previous lesson/Prior Knowledge:
The class has just started Dr. Seuss theme unit and read one of his books yesterday. The class has been working on identifying
opposites seen everyday.
Lesson Presentation:
Estimated Time: 30 min
1. The teacher will say a word out loud to the group and the students will answer with its opposite (big, small; tall , short)

2. The teacher will give instructions to group about how they should raise their hand each time they hear opposites on a
page
3. The teacher will read a few pages slowly to begin and to allow students time to register the words they hear
4. The teacher will then instruct the students to take turns and each read a page themselves
5. After the student reads their page, they will inform the group what opposite pair they read
6. They will write down on a piece of paper the opposite pair
7. The teacher will then have the students put their books down and just listen
8. The teacher will read a page and have the students write down on paper what was the opposite pair they heard
Guided Practice/Active Involvement/Small group work/Independent Practice:

During times while the students are asked to write down words, the teacher will first ask the students to refer to the word
wall before asking for help.
The teacher will help by demonstrating how to sound out words and spell them on a white board.
The students will work independently when writing their lists

The teacher will ask the students to write a list of any opposite words they heard during the book
The teacher will also ask the students to star any opposite pairs that are new
Extension:
Opposite matching games in centers
Recess exit card where the teacher will say a word and the student will respond with an opposite in order to go to recess
