4. Review Appalachian Region

Today were going to do some more review of the Canadian
Regions.
Body
Review Appalachian Region
Have images of Appalachian region on the board
Ask the students to put their finger on it
What is the main characteristic of this region? The
fact that it is surrounded by water, and mostly made up
of islands.
What is significant about the region being
surrounded by water? What does the water do for the
people who live in this region?
- Provides jobs, food, and transportation
- The ocean is extremely important to these people
- Farming, fishing and mining are the main
industries in this region.
What do you think the weather would be like here? Do
you think they have really cold winters? Mild winters?
Really hot summers? WHY? (look this up in the morning)
What natural disasters do you think this region is at risk
of being so close to the ocean? Hurricanes.
Brainstorm a list of plant and animal species that live in
the area. Write these on the board.
To review: What does the Appalachian region provide for
its people? What is the weather like? What natural
disaster is this region at risk of?
ASK: do you feel like experts on the Appalachian region
now? Perfect, lets move onto the next region.

Time

Watch for responses to questions. Guide the discussion in the

appropriate direction.

Put up a picture of Frank Slide. Raise your hand if you

know where this is? Raise your hand if youve been here
before.
Who can tell me what region Frank Slide is in? It is one
that youve learned about before. The Cordillera region.
Put your finger on the Cordillera region.
We have another cool video to show you about this
region.
After the video, ask them to grab their notes that they
previously did on the Cordillera region. You have 1
minute to go to your lockers, grab your notes, and get
back to your seats. 3, 2, 1, go.
From your notes, who can tell me what the main
characteristic of the Cordillera region is? Mountains.
What is helpful about the mountains? Write these things
on the board.
1. Provide tourism skiing and snowboarding which
is good for the economy
2. Provide resources lumber and wood from the
forests
3. Provide shelter from the Arctic winds, which is
why the climate in BC is more mild than the
Appalachian region. The weather is a lot more
mild, especially in the winter.

Do you think that mountains would make life difficult in

any way? Transportation is difficult. A lot of small towns
in the Cordillera region are very remote because of this.
Do you notice how the Appalachian and Cordillera
regions are both on the coast, but they are very, very
different.
What natural disaster do you think would affect the
people of this region? Avalanches.
What kind of species live in this region?

Expand Their Notes

Give the students 5-10 minutes to add anything they
would like to their note sheets
This could be about the resources or climate of the
region, what species live there, what the weather is like.
They can draw or write anything that will help you
remember the key characteristics of the Cordillera
region.
