Immigration Reform

I have chosen to write this paper on immigration reform and how that affects the macro
economy here in our nation. This is a big subject of conversation in our nation today for politics
and in our society in general. In my research of the subject I have found there are some point
on each side of the topic, a positive influence on the economy and a negative influence on the
economy. In my experience it is difficult to know all of the good or bad that will happen from a
given plan until that plan is implemented, however it would obviously not be a smart move to
go over everything before making a decision on immigration for our nation.
One argument for immigration reform is the amount of working class people there are
in the nation today. It is no secret that there are less people in the work force today than there
was in the past few decades. To combat this decline in working people in the nation some
believe we need to have a more lenient immigration policy to allow those who will work to
come into our nation and take the jobs that are left open. Carlos Gutierrez, former CEO of
Kellogg Co., said, One of the reasons why immigration reform is necessary and important is
our working-age population isnt growing If we didnt have immigration, our population would
decline. (Crains Detroit Business) I feel this is a good point that deserves some attention.
I do agree with what he has said, we do need the added population to help build our
economy and make it more stable. However I feel there should be some kind of qualification
process that is more extensive than what there is today. It will not do us any good to bring in
thousands of immigrants and not have them contribute to the building of our economy. Coming
into our nation is a great opportunity for these people and it should be a beneficial relationship
for the nation they are coming into as well. What skills do they have? What education do they

have? In all how are they going to help benefit our nation? This may seem like a hard thing to
expect, but it is the nature of the beast in my opinion. If this is the reason we are allowing more
immigration we need to make sure those coming in can contribute to the overall goal.
Another option involves having people come into the country to go to school and
become an influential part of our society. I feel like this is another great option that may work
as long as we use it in the proper way. Gov. Rick Snyder said, Weve built a system at the
national level that says, We want you to have the worlds best education, share in all this and
get out. Thats dumb. (Crains Detroit Business) My question is how we are going to know if
someone is going to come to our country and actually become an influential part of the
economy after going through school. Another question is what to do if they do not accomplish
this goal that is set in front of them? Do we send them right back where they came from? Over
time these things would be figured out, but we need to go over every scenario and make sure
we are prepared for whatever happens.
There is obviously a lot of politics that goes into immigration reform. It is a battle ground
between the democrat and republican parties that will end with someone taking all the credit.
The Republicans have to lead on immigration reform, said Alfonso Aguilar. Its a gateway
issue that they have to deal with. Otherwise, they will pay in 2016. (Colarusso, Laura M., 2014)
This quote shows exactly what I am talking about, it is more of a battle than it is trying to work
together to get things done. I hope at the end of the day instead of everyone trying to take
credit for the win they will be looking to accomplish the greater good for the American
people and our generations to follow behind us.

One point of view that is not looked at very much, but I feel is still relevant, is the effect
immigration has on the economy of the countries these people are coming from. We are taking
a look at the macro economy which is also affected by the economy of those our country does
imports and exports with. By taking these skilled workers from these outside countries it can
cripple those economies causing them to loose effectiveness and ability to grow. Now some
would say that this is none of our concern, we need to worry about our own problems and
allow them to work on theirs. However having their economy fall could cause major problems
to our own economy in the long run. Again this comes back to the affect it has on the
generations that follow us.
In conclusion I see the need for immigration reform. I know that there are jobs that we
either do not have enough workers for or that people will not accept. However I feel strongly
that when this reform happens it needs to be planned down to the last detail. I also feel that we
as a nation need to benefit from the immigration of these people just as much as they benefit.
We cannot be giving free handouts to whoever comes into our country; we have enough
people in need already in the country that we need to take care of. This may not be an easy
thing to do, but only people who can and will further our economy should be allowed into the
country as immigrants.
