Divorce
Divorce. World of Health. Gale, 2007. Student Resources in Context. Web. 9 Nov. 2014.
This article discusses divorce in its simplicity. The article defines divorce as the legal
ending of marriage by a court of law (Divorce). The article goes on to talk about the long-term
effects divorce has on children, saying they are more likely to live in poverty due to the financial
changes made during a divorce. Finally, the article reviews an old statistic from 2007 saying that
50% of marriages were expected to end in divorce.
This article gives a simple introduction to what divorce is. Its very straightforward and
does not overcomplicate the definition. I can use this in my essay and presentation when I simply
define divorce, as well as I can use the statistic from 2007 as evidence to support the increasing
divorce rate over the years.
Glenn, Norval D. Whats happening to American marriage? USA Today [Magazine] May
1993: 26+. Educators Reference Complete. Web. 9 Nov. 2014.
In his article, Glenn uses many different statistics that shows how the divorce rate
doubled from 1965 to 1975 and has slowly increased to the point where almost 2/3 of marriages
are expected to end in divorce today. Apart of Glenns research included asking couples to rate
their marriages as very happy, pretty happy, or not too happy. His research showed that the
percentage of those who said very happy decreased from 68 to 63%. Lastly, Glenns article
talks about the reasons behind divorce which included failure to meet expectations,
religious/moral views, finances, and even children.
Glenn uses a lot of statistics in his article that I could use to emphasize the increase of
failed marriages. Glenn also discusses some reasons for divorce that I could include in my essay
and presentation.
Hahn, Scott. The Catholic Bible Dictionary. New York: Doubleday, 2009. Print.
In the Catholic Bible Dictionary, Hahn uses a lot of scripture when he talks about
divorce. He goes all the way back to the beginning when God first created Adam and gave him
Eve. However, after the Fall, man fell victim to evil; sin, distrust, selfishness, etc. Hahn points
out specific people in the Old Testament such as Abraham, David, and Jacob who had many
wives. Hahn compares this act to our world today and how adultery originated from the Old
Testament and the Fall of Man.

I really like this source because it has so much scriptural evidence. The whole project is
basically giving the Churchs standpoint on our topics, so with this specific source I can use
actual scripture to back up my argument and the Churchs argument.
Mahoney, Diana. Protecting the children of divorce. Clinical Psychiatry News. Jan. 2005: 62.
Academic OneFile. Web. 9 Nov. 2014.
In her article, Mahoney discusses research in the psychological effects of divorce on
children, saying that children of divorce are at a higher risk for depression and anxiety as well as
drug and alcohol abuse in comparison to children not of divorce. Her article also brings up some
statistics from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics which estimates that nearly 1 million
children will experience parental divorce each year and nearly 40% of those children will be
under 18 when they experience it. According the statistics, 25% of these children will also deal
with behavioral and psychological issues.
This article is similar to the one by Siatis as it discusses the effects of divorce on children.
However, this article offers me more information that his article does not such as actual
percentages and statistics showing the amount of children who are predicted to experience
divorce. I could use this article along with the article by Siatis in talking about the effects on
children.
"Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern Word-Gaudium Et Spes." Pastoral
Constitution on the Church in the Modern Word-Gaudium Et Spes. N.p., n.d. Web. 9
Nov. 2014.
This document from Vatican II discusses human life and the Churchs view on many
things. The document discusses many urgent emergencies in our world today including
divorce. The council says that marriage is unification and the author of it is God, so only He can
bring it apart. No other infidelities should ever tear a marriage apart. The document continues to
discuss the means to a marriage which are to be unitive and procreative. A marriage is not a true
marriage only if these two means are not met.
Gaudium Et Spes is a useful document for my essay and presentation as it gives me the
Churchs view on the subject. This document defines marriage and what it takes for a marriage
to be true. I can use this source when Im talking about the Churchs standpoint on my topic.
Paul II, John. The Catechism of the Catholic Church. Our Sunday Visitor, Publishing Division,
1992. Print.
The Catechism defines divorce as a grave offense against the natural law. Like
Gaudium Et Spes, the Catechism states that marriage cannot be torn apart by anything other than
God. Divorce in the eyes of the Church is a result of sin and therefore effects not only the
spouses and children, but the world around the spouses as well. The Catechism also outlines
adultery, which is usually one of the main causes for divorce.

First of all, the Catechism is necessary for my presentation. However, even if I didnt
need to use it, it would come in handy in explaining the Churchs view on the matter. Gaudium
Et Spes gives more of a description of what a true marriage is and explains a little bit of divorce.
The Catechism, however, goes deeper and talks more about divorce and not just marriage itself. I
could use the Catechism for my entire part of talking about the Churchs view on divorce.
Sheen, Fulton. Three to Get Married. New York: Scepter Publishers Inc., 1996. Print.
The whole book is all about marriage. Every chapter discusses marriage in a deeper way.
As every Catholic source has stated, marriage is a bond no man can break apart. When two
people get married, they become one. Sheen states that the reason a marital bond is so strong is
because the bond mimics the marriages of Christ and the Church. On divorce, Sheen states what
every other Catholic has said; it is a grave offense and a sin to remarry. However, Sheen reasons
that remarriage after a divorce is proof that love has been distorted by sin.
I really enjoy this book because it gives true insight inside a marriage. In order to
understand divorce, one must first understand marriage. I feel as though a lot of the Catholic
views on divorce are repetitive as they all say similar things, however, they all bring something
deeper into my research as well. Sheen concentrates on marriage, so I can use his definition of
marriage in my essay and presentation to argue how divorce not only goes against the Church,
but against the human dignity of the spouses and only brings more sin into our lives, ultimately
hurting us.
Siatis, Perry C. Divorce has lasting effects on children, study says. Trial Aug. 1997: 75+.
Academic OneFile. Web. 9 Nov. 2014.
In his article, Siatis discusses a 25-year study tested on children whose parents had
divorced. The results of this study showed that all of the children admitted to feeling lonely and
had a troubled early adulthood. Half of the children admitted they had problems with drugs and
alcohol growing up as a result from the loneliness following the divorce.
This study that Siatis discusses is all about the effects on the children of the divorced
parents. I can use this source in my essay and presentation when I talk about the short-term and
long-term effects divorce has on children.
