Problem 1 of 3:
The steel beam-column shown is part of a braced frame and is
subjected to the indicated axial load and end moments. The loads
and moments are based on service loads consisting of 55% Dead
Load and 45% Live Load. Select the lightest W10-shape using
A572 Grade 50 steel by solving the steps below. Bending is about
the strong axis.

M2=130 ft-k

L=13

a) Determine factored axial loads and bending moments.

b) Select trial shape assuming amplification factor B1 = 1.0
c) Check if selected section is satisfactory as beam-column using
revised B1

M1 = 100 ft-k

Problem 2 of 3:
Determine the design strength in compression, cPn , for
a column, made of A588 steel, with the built-up cross
section that consists of four 3/8 6-in Plates (PL, see
figure). The column has an effective length KL = 12 ft 8
in. Use elastic modulus E = 29,000 ksi.

Problem 3 of 3:
(a) Using the Alignment Chart, determine the effective length factors K for columns IJ, FG, and
GH. Assume the frame is subject to sidesway (sidesway uninhibited).
(b) Determine the designed compressive strength cPn of those three columns. Use Fy = 50 ksi.
