Introduction
This report identifies the nature of aircraft maintenance engineer job and educational, skills,
certificates and qualifications required. It illustrates interview process with information gathered
during the interview. It includes the research about the job and competencies required in the
aircraft maintenance engineer job. It compared the information gathered from the interview and
the research with my qualification and experience. Finally and then conclude what I need to do
to close the gap between my qualifications and experiences and those required for this job.

Interview process
I met my cousin last Friday afternoon at the grandfather house. I was very interested my
interview with this talented, focused, self-motivated and courteous cousin who is ready to work
in anytime, anywhere without any complains.
He is an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer working in Gulf Air the Bahraini National airline, Board
Member of Bahrain Athletics Association and Committee Member of Bahrain Road Runners.
He said that he graduated from Hamad Town Science secondary school and then studied in
Bahrain Training Institute and completed a High National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
During his studying in Bahrain Training Institute he got many job opportunities at different
companies in Bahrain, such as Alba, Bapco, GPIC and Gulf Air and that because he was one of
the students who got a high GPA on National Diploma at that time.
It was a hard decision for him to select between these companies as they are the most famous in
Bahrain. He did interviews in all companies and then reviewed their offers and after consulting
his family, friends and other experienced persons on that particular job, he finally decided to
accept the Gulf Airline offer due to travel opportunities, good variety of jobs, better chance job
development and high paid salary. Working in Aviation is a new field for him as he had neither
experience nor background in Aviation before getting this job. He did not expect to work in
Aviation before seeing the advertisement in the newspaper and got interested to apply for his job,
cousin said.

In the beginning, he was selected to be a Trainee Aircraft Maintenance Engineer together with
other seventeen trainees including one girl to undergo the Engineering Training program. Gulf
Air set a national program for Bahrainis to grant the Europe Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) IR
Part 66 licenses and that program was planned to conduct in Bahrain. In order for them to grant
the EASA IR Part 66 license in category B1 (Mechanical) or B2 (Electrical) trainees has to do
two years theoretical (in Class) and two years practical training on life aircrafts, cousin said.
He said that after one year of studying in Bahrain, Gulf Air decided to discontinue the program
in Bahrain and send only twelve trainees out of eighteen to Aviation Australia School in
Australia to finish the theoretical part. These twelve trainees were selected based on punctuality,
passing the modules, honesty at work and basic skills such as Reading, speaking, listening and
reading. Cousin was selected among these twelve trainees because he appeared to the class on
time, passed all modules, honest and he is good in all the necessary skills.
After he had completed the theoretical part the two years, practical training started in Bahrain
Airport at Gulf Air aircrafts. He said that during his training he was involved in different level of
maintenance tasks including component replacement, troubleshooting and routine inspection; all
these maintenance tasks were documented on one logbook and this logbook was sent along with
his theoretical certificates to UK Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA) licensing department in
order to grant the EASA IR Part 66 license. He is promoted as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer
after he granted the License and completed the aircraft type course on one of Gulf Air aircraft.
All these process took him four years till he finished the program.
He is working now as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer on all Gulf Air fleet the small and large
aircrafts; the nature of his job involves servicing, troubleshooting, defect rectification,
inspections, component changes, and testing of system as per Aircraft Maintenance Manual
Procedures. He is performing following maintenance tasks; Daily check, transit check, weekly
check and defect rectification on Aircraft Technical Logbook reported and deferred defect items.
His presence is very important to all assigned Gulf Air aircrafts before it depart to any station as
he needs to do a physical walk around to the aircraft and making sure that the fuselage and
engines are clean from Foreign Object Damage (FOD), dent, crack and no system is leaking.

After finishing from the walk around, he has to review the Aircraft Technical Logbook and clear
any defect written by captain if any. He said that he learned from his work certain skills such as
team work; problem-solving, being a self-independent, decision making, working under-pressure
and time management.
He recommended his job to me, because it will be a good opportunity for me to meet different
people from different countries (social interaction and cultural exchange), getting high paid
salary job, better chance job development and knowing different field in your study life.

Research
Additional research about the responsibility and skills required in the job of Aircraft
Maintenance Engineer was collected from Europe Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and UK
Civil Aviation Authority official sites and found that this job responsibility and skills are similar
in all airlines around the world but European and US has a different rules and procedures in term
of getting the license. The aim of becoming an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is not simple to
achieve. The international regulations stated that the person has to be at least 18 years old, has a
good English language, have a practical experience in working at aircraft engines, airframe and
components, holding of international license which is recognize by the country he/she works and
passing particular aircraft type course.

Conclusion
To conclude, it was a great experience for me to learn about this job. The interested part of it is
that Bahraini girls are joining this field and proving them self in aviation, and make this job not
restricted to men and this led me to think truly in joining the aviation field.
Aircraft Maintenance Engineer job requires a vocational qualification, and it is different from my
academy qualification and that will not be a stopper in being aircraft maintenance engineer. The
two years theoretical study in Aviation school and another two years practical in airline will
close the gap of the academy qualification to get the job of Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.
