A crime in which an imposter obtains key pieces of personal
information, such as Social Security or driver's license numbers, in
order to impersonate someone else.
Example: In the movie The Net the main character gets her identity
stolen and someone else impersonates her

Laws Against ID Theft

Identity

Theft is a very important topic and is not to be taken lightly here are some of the laws in Canada.

Law No 1 ID systems should not collect, use, or disclose ID without a

users consent.
Law No 2 ID systems should minimize the amount of personal
identification collected.
Law No 3 ID systems should share personal information only as
necessary and as little as possible. Law No 4 Universal online ID systems should support a
range of identifiers with varying degrees of observability and privacy appropriate
to the intended use and relationship.

Jail Time
In 2004, the Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act was signed. This law deals
with identity theft punishment in more specific terms. It defines prison terms and other
penalties depending on the specific nature of the theft. It increased jail time for identity
theft to 3-5 years.
One thing that this law does is add two years of jail time to those who commit
aggravated identity theftin other words, stealing an identity for the purpose of
committing other Federal felonies.
For identity theft involving terrorism, the penalty can go all the way up to 25 years of jail
time for both international and domestic terrorism.

Punishments
The details of Federal punishment for identity theft and the Identity Theft

Penalty Enhancement Act as posted on the government site is as follows:

Increase penalties by two years for anyone who commits A "aggravated
identity theft" in order to commit another serious Federal offense (including
immigration violations, false citizenship crimes, firearms offenses, Social

Security fraud, government theft, and other serious crimes);

Increase penalties by five years for anyone who commits identity theft for
the purpose of committing a terrorist act;
Expand the maximum penalty for identity theft under Federal law from

three to five years;

Clarify that the twenty-five year maximum sentence for identity theft in
facilitating terrorism applies to both international and domestic terrorism;
and
