Day 11

Lesson: The Statue of Liberty Introduction (25 Minutes)


Objectives
Students will be able to describe the features of the Statue of Liberty
Students will be able to describe why the Statue of Liberty is important to the United States

Identify American symbols, landmarks, and essential documents, such as the flag, bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, U.S.
Constitution, and Declaration of Independence, and know the people and events associated with them.

Instructional Directions
Students will gather at the carpet and begin an I wonder discussion about the Statue of Liberty.
Students will then watch History of the Statue of Liberty https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3utCntXrPo
Students will then partner read the Statue of Liberty pamphlet. Students will be placed in heterogeneous pairs to
ensure success for all students. They will be asked to find important facts and will be randomly selected to share their
ideas and thoughts.

Day 12
Lesson: Creating the Comic Strip (30 minutes)
Objectives
Students will create a comic strip based on how the Statue of Liberty came to the United States

Constitution, and Declaration of Independence, and know the people and events associated with them.

Instructional Directions
Students will watch the Story of the Statue of Liberty on YouTube
Students will think-pair-share all of the facts they have learned thus far about the Statue of Liberty, mainly focusing on
how she made her way to the United States.
Using the readwritethink.org template, students will create a class comic strip describing the Statue of Libertys
journey and how she came to the United States.

Day 13
Lesson: Creating the Web (30 minutes)
Objectives
Students will create a web using facts from informational text
California State Standards
Identify American symbols, landmarks, and essential documents, such as the flag, bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, U.S.
Constitution, and Declaration of Independence, and know the people and events associated with them.
Common Core Standards:
10. With prompting and support, read informational texts appropriately complex for grade 1.

Statue of Liberty pamphlet
Blank piece of paper for each student
yellow (or other light colored) crayon

Students will watch a brief Statue of Liberty for Kids video
As a class, we will read through the Statue of Liberty pamphlet and highlight the important information
Students will create their own web alongside the class web using the information chosen from the pamphlet.

Day 14 and 15
Lesson: Creating the Paragraph
Objective
Students will be able to create a T-Chart using facts from their web
Students will be able to use their T-Chart to write a paragraph that includes a topic sentence, 3 supporting facts, and
a concluding sentence

Instructional Directions
Students will visit http://www.earthcam.com/usa/newyork/statueofliberty/?cam=liberty_harbor where they will be able
to see the views from the New York Harbor, the torch, and the crown.
As a whole class, students will fill-in the first green on the T-Chart
Then, independently, students will fill in their yellows on their T-Chart. (Students who struggle independently will be
pulled back for small group instruction)
Once students have completed their T-Chart, as a whole class, we will create a topic sentence.
Students will then independently write their own yellows (details). Before they can move forward to the next yellow,
students will be required to show me each yellow to ensure that they are keeping on topic and writing full and
complete sentences.

Day 15
Lesson: Creating a Piece of Art (30 Minutes)
Objective
Students will create an original piece of art

Students perceive and respond to works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. They also use the
vocabulary of the visual arts to express their observations.

1.1 Describe and replicate repeated patterns in nature, in the environment, and in works of art.

Materials
Silhouette of Statue of Liberty for each student
Scissors
Paint brush for each student
Blue watercolor paint
Purple watercolor paint
Orange watercolor paint
Red watercolor paint
Large piece of white construction paper for each student
Instructional Directions
Students will place their large white construction paper vertically.
Students will use one color at a time to paint horizontally to create a background that looks like a sunset. It is
important to model the steps here to ensure that all students are aware of the directions.
Allow the paint to dry completely.
Students will carefully cut out their Statue of Liberty Silhouette
Students will glue their silhouette onto their painted background
