This specification shall be revised if enhancements become available or if changes in the business conditions dictate. In case of doubt the English language document should be consulted as the authoritative text. 1.0 SCOPE This specification covers the procedure used in the prestressing alloy bolting members used on pressure vessels, etc., where the bolting is of materials shown in Table 1 or Table 5 (Metric). Prestressing produces the initial bolt stress necessary to secure leakproof joints. The required initial bolt stress at the root of thread is determined by the process spec. AK 2011-09-29 5.0 EQUIPMENT 51 52 Bolt Heaters 5.1.1. Bolt members in types and sizes covered by requiring heating are heated by a shielded probe type electric heater shown in Figure 12 or a gas bolt heater shown in Figure 11. They are used to raise the temperature of the bolting member thus elongating it to allow tightening. 5.1.2. Water cooled high frequency induction heating equipment, vendor supplied (see Figure 22). Bolt Stretch Measuring Device (Figures 11, 12, 13 & 14) The measuring device is composed of a sleeve and a rod as shown in Figure 13 and 14 and is used as follows: The bolting member (except as indicated in Note A) is provided with a tapped hole in the bottom for the insertion of a screw for locating the end of the rod. There is also a tapped hole in the top of the bolting member, the minimum metal to metal diameter of which provides acourate diametral location of the sleeve. This tapped hole is used also for the closing screw to keep the inside of the bolting member clean before and after heating and measuring have been completed when standard hex nuts are used on bolting members. In cases where standard length or extra length extension nuts are used the screw is placed in the top of the nut. In use, the sleeve is inserted in the tapped hole in the top of the bolting member, either directly or through the hole in the extension nut, with care being taken to insure that the sleeve seats on the shoulder at the bottom of the tapped hole. The rod is inserted in the sleeve and lowered until the end of the rod rests on the point of the bottom closing screw (in thread diameters under 2 inches [50.8 mm)) or until the end of the rod drops over the closing screw as in thread diameters 2 inches (50.8 mm) and larger. A depth micrometer is placed on the locating surface of the rod with the micrometer rod extending through the hole in this surface to contact the locating pin on the sleeve. NOTE A: In old design bolting members with a blind hole in bolting sizes 2 inches (50.8 mm) and over, new style measuring devices must not be used unless the measuring rod is altered by threading the socket in the end of the rod (as called for on Drawing 10-H-668) and adding a special plug (Drawing 10-H-669) in this thread. The plug centers the rod in the hole to guarantee repetitive readings in Siemens Energy, Inc. Any prestressing instructions on the drawing shail take precedence over this specification. 10.0 OPERATIONS FOR METRIC BOLTING MEMBERS 10.1 Bolting Members Assembled Without Heating Using Torque Control of Stressing 10.1.1. Lubricate bearing surfaces of nuts, screws and washers. Starting with the lead thread, lubricate half the length of the threaded surfaces on all male and female ‘components as follows. Apply lubricant to threads using a uniform, light coat. Steam Turbine: Use M 53701Y3. Other lubricants are not permitted. Combustion Turbine: Use M 5370121 (C-102). Other lubricants are not permitted NOTE: M 53701Y3, Fel-Pro N7000, contains calcium stearate. Small quantities of calcium stearate, on the order of a few ounces, may lead to boiler foaming and consequent poor steam purity. Therefore, after assembly, all excess lubricant must be thoroughly wiped away. 10.1.2 Tighten nut or screw hand tight to ensure free running threads. 10.1.3 Tighten as required by torque Table 6. 10.2 Bolting Members Assembled With Heating 10.2.1 Lubricate bearing surfaces of nuts, screws and washers. (See Figures 13 and 14) 10.2.4 Pretighten with torque from Table 9 using a torque wrench. Apply the pretightening torque over entire bolting surface. Obtain nut turn from Figures 7, 8, 9 or 10 (see Figures 15 through 21 for free length) and mark nut and bolting surface to indicate amount to be tumed. 10.2.5 If heated by a gas bolt heater, refer to Figure 11 and Section 8.2.5. 10.2.6 If heated by electric bolt heaters, heat as shown in Figure 12 and tighten until marks coincide. 10.2.7 If heated by high frequency induction heaters, refer to procedure below: 10.2.7.1 Place inductor inside the bore of stud or dowel. 10.2.7.2. Energize inductor to a maximum of 60 kW. 10.2.7.3 Continue to heat stud or dowel until minimum elongation is achieved. Tighten until matchmarks align. 10.2.7.4 Continue heating all remaining studs and dowels in the recommended pattern until all matchmarks are aligned. 10.2.8 After bolting member has cooled to surrounding temperature, remeasure length with measuring device and depth micrometer to determine elongation. From the face of the nut, or from the first engaged thread in a hole, the stress falls off regularly until it reaches zero at the last engaged thread. Total elongation within engaged threads is, therefore, an average or about half what it would be if uniformly loaded. The stressed length, or free length is, therefore, from the center of the engaged threads on one end to the center of the engaged threads on the other; and, in the case of screws, from the bearing surface under the head to the center of the engaged threads on the other end. To simplify—free length is the distance between first engaged threads plus one thread diameter except for screws on which half a diameter should be used SHOWN BELOW ARE THE PRINCIPAL BOLTING MEMBER TYPES WITH INFORMATION REQUIRED TO DETERMINE FREE LENGTH oi Jt ZZ SS Figure 15 Figure 16 Figure 17 Figure 18 ‘Siemens Energy, inc.
