Course Description & Pathway Information


How money smart are you? Step into this course specifically designed for high school students to understand
the importance of the financial world, including planning and managing money wisely. Areas of study taught
through application in personal finance include sources of income, budgeting, banking, consumer credit, credit
laws and rights, personal bankruptcy, insurance, spending, taxes, investment strategies, savings accounts,
mutual funds and the stock market, buying a vehicle, and living independently. Based on the hands-on skills and
knowledge applied in this course, students will develop financial goals and create realistic and measurable
objectives to be MONEY SMART! Through project-based learning activities and tasks, students will apply
mathematical concepts in realistic scenarios and will actively engage by applying the mathematics necessary to
make informed decisions related to personal finance. Financial Literacy places great emphasis on problem
solving, reasoning, representing, connecting and communicating financial data.
Various forms of technologies and internet research will be highlighted to expose students on the resources
available when managing personal financial goals. Employability skills are integrated into activities, tasks, and
projects throughout the course standards to demonstrate the skills required by business and industry.
Competencies in the co-curricular student organization, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), are integral
components of the employability skills standard for this course.
Financial Literacy is the second course in the Business Accounting pathway. Students enrolled in this course
should have successfully completed Introduction to Business & Technology. Upon completion of Financial
Literacy, students will finish the pathway with Principles of Accounting I. The EOPA (End of Pathway Assessment)
for the Business Accounting pathway is the Business Financial Management from NOCTI.
Students who complete the Business Accounting pathway will have gained the knowledge and skills to continue
on the path to careers like financial manager, tax preparer, financial analyst, accountant, auditory, bookkeeper,
accounting clerk, budget analyst, purchasing manager, or business manager.
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
FBLA is a co-curricular student organization that plays an integral part in the components of the Financial
Literacy course standards. FBLA activities are incorporated throughout this course and the rest of the Business
and Computer Science courses. Students are strongly urged to join FBLA ($25) to benefit from the wealth of
opportunities the organization has to offer.

Make-Up Policy
It is the student's responsibility to make up all missed assignments when absent from class. Students have 3
days to make up work from an excused absence. If an assignment was due the day you were absent, the
assignment is due the day you return.
Late Work
If an assignment is accepted late the student will receive a 5 point deduction for each day past the due date.

Classroom & Computer Lab Expectations
Financial Literacy is a business education course, therefore, all students are expected to conduct themselves in a
professional manner. Acting in a professional manner refers to behavior expected of individuals in the
workplace. Examples of acting in a professional manner include being on time, turning in assignments on time,
and not disrupting the learning process. Acting in a nonprofessional manner will result in consequences.

Class will be conducted from bell to bell.


Show up for class each day.
No food, drinks, candy, or gum will be allowed.
Show respect and courtesy to all people.
Handle all equipment and materials with care.
Stay on task.
Default settings should not be changed.
Sharing of work is dishonest and will warrant disciplinary action.
Passwords are not to be shared with anyone for any reason.
Turn in all work in a neat and professional manner.
Be familiar with the student Handbook because all school policies apply and are enforced in the
classroom and labs.

Teacher has the right to make adjustments to the syllabus as deemed necessary throughout the semester.
