SouthernColonialHouses
SouthernColonialhousesorientatedfromEnglandaroundthecolonialperiodin
the1700s.TheColonialhouseswerebuiltintwomainUSregions:NewEnglandandin
theSouthernUnitedStates.Architecturalstylesmigratedalongwiththepioneerstothe
West.TheSouthernColonialhousewasnottheonlytypeofcolonialhouse.Therewere
othersbuiltincludingNewEngland,Spanish,andFrenchColonial.Eachoneofthem
haddifferentcharacteristics.
TheSouthernColonialstyletookinspirationfromtheRomanandGreek
Revival,forexamplethebigwhitecolumnsyouwillalways
seeonasoutherncolonialhouseareainspirationtheygot
fromtheGreekRevival.Sinceinthatperiodalotofpeople
werewealthy,thehouseswerebig.Thehousesstartedoffas
twostoryhouseswithoneortworoomsoneachleveland
thenstartedtoincreasewithtimes.Thearchitecturesmade
theroofsandceilingshightoallowventilationtocome
throughduringthesummerheat.TheSouthernColonial

housescanbeseenevennowinpresentdayAmerica.
ColumnsareamainfeatureoftheSoutherncolonialhouseandthereareusually
4to6columns.Youwillalwaysspotthetypeofhousestylesbecauseoftheirfamous
columns.Thehouseisverysymmetrical,with4windowsononesideand4other
windowsontheotherside,1chimneyoneachsideandthesamenumberofcolumns
oneachside.Thehouseisalmostalwayspaintedwhiteorsometimestheyusebricks.
Theyusebrickforthestructureofthehouseandwoodforcreatingtheporch.Thisstyle
startedoutwithoutdormersbutastheyearswentbyarchitectsaddeddormersand
introducedmoredetailtothehouse.Thisstylealsocontainsotherdetailsincludinga
pedimentoverthefrontdoor,shutteredwindowsandwideporches.Theroofisoftena
mediumorshallowpitchedroof.Thehousemayalsoshowverticallineswith
rectangularorsquareshapes,whichmakesitaverysymmetricalhouse.Theseareall
differenttypeoffeaturesyouwillfindonaSouthernColonialhomeanddon'tforgetto
lookforthefamouscolumnsonthesebeautifulhomesasyouarelookingatthem.

basicallyfirststarted.Ifyoucanseesomeofthesecharacteristicsinahomethenyou
maybeseeingasoutherncolonialhouse.IpickedtodoaSouthernColonialhouse
becauseofhowbigtheyare.Iwouldlovetohaveabigporchwithhighceilingsand
longwhitecolumns.Withthehousemodeliamdesigningiamincludingthisfeature
too.Iamalsopaintingthehousewhiteandthedoorred.Maybeonedaywhenigrow
upicandesignmyownhomeandmakeitaSouthernColonialhome.
