Abstract
ThePoliceDepartmentofSanLeandroaskedMr.Farleysclassifhecandoanexperimentand
trytofindoutwhattheaveragespeedofcarsweredrivingdownBancroft.Weexperimentedfor
adaybytakingstopwatchesinfrontoftheschoolandwerecordedthetimeittookforacarto
travel10metersonthestopwatchandwroteitdown.Wemeasurethatonlyabout3carsoutof
52weregoingabovethespeedlimitwhichis25mph.Tofindthepercentageofcarsspeeding
wewouldhavetodividethenumberofcarsspeedingbythetotalnumberofcars.Wefoundout
thatabout6outofevery100carswouldspeeddownBancroft.Wealsofoundoutthatone
reasonthatsomecarswerenotspeedingwasbecausetheysawstudentsonthesidewhichwould
makethembecuriousandslowdown,thatisapossibility.Theaveragespeedofallthe52cars
thatwecollecteddatafromwasabout21mph.

wouldspeeddownBancroftaveinfrontofSanLeandroHighSchool.TheyaskedMr.Farleyif
hecandoanexperimenttotrytofindoutwhattheaveragespeedwasofcarsandwhat
percentageofthemwerespeeding.
Thisisjustanintroductionparagraphthatpresentstheproblemsaddressedbythepaper.
Explainwhyyourresearchisimportantandanyhistoricalevidenceorpreviousresearchonthe
topic.Thisisageneraldiscussionoftheproblem,thehistoricalsignificanceorreasonforthe
research,andwhatmakesitinteresting.
MeasurementsandCalculations
Wecollecteddatafromabout52carsthatpassedthroughthefrontofSanLeandroHigh
School.MostcarsdrivingdownBancroftweregenerallynotspeedingandoneoftheconclusions
Ihavecameupwithisbecausetherearestudentspresent.Outof52cars,only3wereactually
caughtgoingabove25mph,whichisabout6%,whichisnotasignificantnumber.Onlyoneof
those3carswasgoingabove30mph,whichisabouta.90%.

ThepercentageofcarsthatspeddownBancroftwasabout6%whichisnotahigh
percentbutcanbelowered.Wewerenotcompletelysureifourmeasurementswerecompletely
correctduetothefactthatwehadlimitedresourcestoconductthisexperiment.Theaverage
speedthatwasdrivingdownbancroftwasabout21mphwhichisgoodbecauseitshowsthatthe
averagecarisgoinglowerthanthespeedlimitimplies.Wealsohavetotakeintoconsideration
thatweonlyconductthisexperimentduringashortamountoftime.Thereisatimewherecars
usuallydriveslowerandthatisbefore8amorafter3pm.Itdoesmakeadifferencebasedonthe
amountoftrafficthatthereis.
Conclusion
Overallourresearchwasdonetothebestofourability.Wetriedthehardestwe
couldinordertoconductthemosteffectiveresearchandtotrytogeteveryequationasaccurate
aspossible.WeconcludedthatcarstendtonotspeeddownBancroftwhichcanrelatetothefact
thattherearestudentspresentwhichusuallymeansthatdriversshouldbegoingslowerthan
usual.Wecoulddefinitelyimprovethisexperimentinthefuturebytryingtobemoreaccurate
withthetimingandthedistanceinwhichwemeasurethecars.Alsowecanimproveonthe
technologyweuseinconductingresearch.
