1.(10pts). If the data variables are P, f, and V, how would you plot the following
expression to get a and b from a straight line?
1=P*f*[a*(2+V) + (3+2*V)*V*b]

Page 2

2.(10pts). If a heat transfer coefficient, U, is equal to 10 BTU/(sqft*hour*F), what is

its value in W/(sqMeter*K) ?

3.(20pts). The pressure drop developed in a pipe is given by the following equation:
P=2**V2*f*L/D
Where: = 62.4 Lbm/cuft (also 1g/cc) , V = 100 cm/s, L = 64.4ft, and D = 10cm.
f=.05/Re1/5 and Re = D**V/ where is .01 g/cm*s. Calculate P in Lbf/sqft.

4.(20pts). Brief questions and answers. Do the following processes a through d

require recycle streams and/or purge streams. Give brief reasons.
a.

A process is fed 150 moles of nitrogen and 450 moles of hydrogen to

make ammonia with a single pass conversion of 100%.

b.

A process is fed 110 moles of nitrogen and 300 moles of hydrogen to

make ammonia with a single pass conversion of 20%.

c.
A process is fed 100 moles of carbon monoxide and 200 moles of
hydrogen and 100 moles nitrogen to make methanol with a single pass conversion of
80%.
d.
A process is fed 100 moles of carbon monoxide and 200 moles of
hydrogen and 100 moles nitrogen to make methanol with a single pass conversion of
100%.

5. (20pts) The following separation unit separates ethanol, water, acetone and acetic
acid from stream F. The feed stream, F, contains 10 mole% ethanol. Calculate the
composition of the F stream in mole fractions of the components.

6. (20pts) The following process converts carbon monoxide and hydrogen into
methanol. The feed stream contains 30 mole% CO and 70mole % H2. The mixing
point composition is 20 mole% CO and 80 mole% H2. Reaction conversion per pass
is 33.3%. Calculate the feed rate, no, the purge rate np, and the recycle rate, nr.
