FIBROADENOMA

Histological appearance
And structure

Most common benign

tumour of female
breast

Fibrous + epithelial
elements

GROSS

solitary

Discrete
Well-circumscribed
Freely mobile
Encapsulated
15 30 (20-30) y/o

May become
malignant; CIS

2-3 cm

Spherical or discoid
mass

Cut surface appearance

Firm, grey-white, slightly myxoid
May form slit-like spaces by compressed
ducts

MICROSCOPIC STRUCTURE

Dominated by fibrous tissue

The arrangements of fibrous tissue and ducts

epithelium may produce two types of
patterns
intracanalicular and pericanalicular

THE EPITHELIAL TISSUE

The epithelial tissue is usually

lack of hyperchromatism and
pleomorphism

In some cases, hyperplasia can be marked. It

tends to occur more commonly in juvenile
fibroadenomas

Pericanalicular pattern
Masses of fibrous stroma around the ducts of
mammary gland

The fibrous stroma ; hyalinised collagen

Pericanalicular pattern

The compressed ducts show linear

branching pattern with slit-like lumens

Intracanalicular Pattern
stromal connective tissue invaginates into
the glandular component

Intracanalicular Pattern
