The Institute has consistently espoused some very simple but important ideas: in towns and the countryside, everything affects everything else; information and plans may not always have the desired results, but they are far better than ignorance as a basis for action; short- termism is folly. As a professional body the Institute seeks to ensure and enhance the competence of its members. In all these respects I welcome this report as particularly valuable and important. It puts forward practical ideas about one of the most important issues facing humanity: how to switch towards more sustainable patterns of energy use. I hope that it will be widely used by professional planners, other built environment professionals, developers and politicians to advance understanding about how good quality town and country planning can make a contribution to changing our patterns of energy consumption and waste Professor Cliff Hague President, RTPI ©The Royal Town Planning Institute
