Course Syllabus
Middle School Computers
Course Description:
Middle school computers is a basic typing and computer applications course.
We will be covering many different areas from typing, digital citizenship,
computer components, and applications.
Course Objectives:
The objective of this class is to build basic lifelong computers skills.
Classroom Expectations:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Bring all needed materials to class.

Be in your seat and ready to work when the bell rings.
Respect and be polite to all people.
Listen and stay seated when someone is talking.
Respect other peoples property.
No food or drinks other than water are permitted in class.
Obey all school rules.

Materials:
You will need a notebook and pens or pencils for class EVERYDAY. Please come
prepared, because you will not be excused to your locker, car, home, etc. to retrieve
these items.
Grading:
I expect that every one of you will be successful in this class and I guarantee if you
do your work, you will! Your grade depends on you. If you work hard, participate,
and complete assignments you will do well. Grades will be based on the following
scale:
90-100% = A
89-80% = B
79-70% = C
I do not expect that anyone will go lower than this; however, if you do Fs will be
based on similar numbers.

Grades will be calculated based on the total number of points you earn throughout
the semester. Points will be earned every day, for things including (but not limited
to) typing minutes recorded, warm-ups, participation, in class activities, worksheets,
quizzes, written responses, papers, projects and tests. The number of points will
vary for each assignment or activity.
Assignments/Homework:
You will earn your grade based on the following things:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Daily Work and homework

In-class participation including typing
Computer Labs
Projects/papers
Quizzes & Tests
Final Exam

All areas, except the final exam, are of equal importance so do not slack off in an
area and expect that it will not hurt your grade!
I believe the five purposes of homework are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Practice
Interaction
Application
Extension
Preparation

In addition, All homework is to be completed in blue or black ink, pencil or type

written. Papers need to be clean; I dont want the messy edges from spiral
notebooks. I expect neatness on all homework. If I cant read it I cant grade it.
Extra Credit:
I do not give random extra credit to anyone who wants it SO DO NOT ASK ME! If
you work hard, you shouldnt need extra credit. However, I know we all have bad
days and so there will be several extra credit chances given to the entire class, at
which you can choose whether or not you want to complete it. If you think you need
those few extra points, wait patiently, I promise they will come.
Attendance:
I believe that your attendance is very important and that you really miss out on
what happens in class when you are not here. Therefore, let me stress a few things
about attendance.
1. School attendance policy- Idaho Code requires that students be enrolled in
school ages 6-16. Students are required to be in attendance, at minimum,
90% of the time. Each semester you can miss no more than 7 days. Days

2.

counted as absent include illness and medical appointments. Arrangements

can be made for extenuating circumstances such as surgery, serious illness,
etc. The more students are in attendance at school, the greater opportunity
they have to learn. (See Butte High School Student Handbook for semester
attendance procedure)
If you are absent, you will come prepared the next day with any homework.
Because we will do a lot of in-class work together, you simply cannot make up
everything you miss when you are gone. Therefore, daily work that happens
during the class cannot be made up, NO MATTER WHAT! You can make up
quizzes or any assignments that are given as homework on the day you are
gone. Things that are completed in class, however, are lost to you forever.
If you do need to make up a quiz or a test, you need to do this Tuesday
afternoon immediately after school ends-the very next Tuesday after the day
you miss, this is the ONLY day you can do this, so please plan ahead. (See
Procedures)
If you miss a day, any assignment that was given before you left is due the
day you return. If you come without it, you are out of luck. Check the class
folder to see that you missed. (See Procedures)

Tardies:
1. School Policy- Three unexcused tardies equals one absence.
2. Please note there is NO 24 hour rule for tardiesyou must bring a note with
you when you come in late for it to be an excused tardy. You cannot bring a
note from a parent/etc. the next day.
3. There are two kinds of tardiesexcused and unexcused. Unexcused tardies
will follow the school policy. Excused tardies follow my policy. For every three
excused tardies, you owe me 15 minutes of work after school. You will have
one week to accomplish this, after which your three tardies will become 1
unexcused tardy.
4. If you come in after Ive marked role-it is your responsibility to be sure that
the absence is corrected to a tardy. (See Procedures)
5. Tardies include going to the restroom; your locker, car, etc. to retrieve
assignments that are due- you have the choice whether to take a tardy or a
zero. Tardies also include going to the office if you come unprepared with
your excuse note.
Late Work:
ABSOLUTELY NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!!!! You need to keep
up with the class and turn things in on time.
1. Any daily assignments will be due in the basket at the BEGINNING of the
period.
2. Again, tests and quizzes must be made up by the next Tuesday after you
were gone.

3. Projects are due the day assigned- unless you are absent and then they are
due upon return. Unless you know you are going to be gone, then turn it in
before you leave. This includes athletes!

Make-up Work:
1. YOU are in charge of obtaining your own make-up work. Check the folder first,
then ask a buddy, then ask me.
2. If you are absent, you will be given the number of days you were gone plus
one to get your make-up work in.
3. No credit for makeup work will be given for ISS or OSS (for any reason).
4. No credit for makeup will be given if you are truant from my class.
5. No credit for makeup work will be given for missing ONLY my class.
6. No credit for being dismissed from my class based on behavior, this includes
participation points and assignments cannot be made up.
7. If a request for homework for future absences is made I will attempt to
provide the homework assignments; however, due to my belief in the five
purposes of homework, the assignments may change. Therefore, you will be
responsible for the previously assigned work as well as the newly assigned
work upon your return.
Computer Guidelines:
1. Every student must have a computer password account.
2. No food or drink anywhere near the computers or in the lab for that matter.
3. No saving to the hard drive-please be prepared with a disk, thumb drive, or
use your school account provided by the school.
4. No changing computer settings-this includes color, screen savers, wall paper
etc. If you are caught doing this, you computer privileges will be cancelled.
5. No games without prior permission.
6. Internet use is limited to class work only.
A FEW WORDS ABOUTCHEATING
1. Cheating is not doing your own work by lying, copying, stealing, borrowing,
looking at, copy and pasting anybody elses work.
2. All homework must be done individually (do not read, write, help each other,
etc.)
3. All class work will be done individually unless otherwise stated.
4. Cheating rules apply both to the person who has done the copying and the
person who let the copying take place. Both people will lose credit for the
assignment and be sent to the office.
A couple of helps for you because life doesnt always go the way you
plan

1. ONCE during the semester you may Starburst a test or project. This means
that you do not have to take the test or turn in the assignment on the day it
is given/due but can hold off and come take the test by the next make-up
date (Tuesday) instead, projects are allowed to be turned in two days late
with full credit given. You MUST come the very next make-up date (Tuesday)
(one chance only!) and bring a regular size bag of Starbursts. This option is
not available for the final exam.
2. I will take projects or papers (this does NOT include daily homework
assignments) ONE day late for half credit.
