Geometry B Unit One Review

Distance Formula
=

(1 2 )2 +(1 2 )2

You have to use this formula to determine the

types of figures created by coordinate points.

Types of Figures
Rectangle
Opposite sides are equal and parallel
Adjacent (touching) sides are perpendicular

Square
All sides are equal
Opposite sides are parallel
Adjacent (touching) sides are perpendicular

Types of Figures
Triangle
Equilateral
All sides equal

Isosceles
Two sides equal

Scalene
No sides equal

Right
Two sides are perpendicular

Types of Figures
Trapezoid
Only one set of opposite sides are parallel

Parallelogram
Opposite sides are parallel and equal
Adjacent (touching) sides are NOT perpendicular

Slope

2 1
2 1

Positive goes up from left to right

Negative goes down from left to right

Parallel same
Perpendicular opposite reciprocals

Writing Equations
Always use slope intercept form
= +

Use point the new line is going thru as your y

and x to find b
So, write an equation parallel to = 3 + 2
that goes thru the point (5,4)
4=3 5 +
4 = 15 +
11 =
= 3 11

Splitting the Difference

You are given 2 coordinates, A and B
Want to find a section of the total distance
between the coordinates
We will call that section, S
A is (x 1 , y 1 )

B is (x 2 , y 2 )

Equations to use to find Distance

1 2 =
1 2 =

To find Exact Coordinate

Start at A and move X-distance towards B
Start at A and move Y-distance towards B

Point G is located at (4, 2) and point H is

located at (7, 8). Find x value for the point that
2
is the distance from point G to point H.
3

First use the equation from before:

2
3

2
3

4 7 = 11 = 7.33

Now go 7.33 units from the x at point G:

4 + 7.33 = 11.33

Ratios
To turn Ratios into distances to find sections:
Add the numbers of the ratio together to get total
distance
EX: Ratio 2:3 2+3 is 5 total sections

Turn it into a fraction with the first # of the ratio as

numerator and the total distance as the
denominator
EX: 2 was first and 5 total sections

Find the x value for point I such that DI and EI

form a 3:5 ratio. D(-3,2) and E(5,5).

First turn your ratio to a fraction:

3 + 5 = 8

3
8

Now use the equation:

3
8

3
8

3 5 = 8 = 3

Now move 3 units from the x at D to E:

3 + 3 = 0

Perimeter
Square: 4s
S is the length of one side

Rectangle: 2L + 2W
L is the length and W is the width of a side

Triangle: Add the three sides lengths together

Applications
You must use the distance formula to find the
lengths of the sides to find perimeter

Area

Triangle: bh
B is base (bottom)
H is height (must be from a right angle)

Rectangle: LW
Square: SS
Parallelogram: bh
Applications

h
b

You must use the distance formula to find the

lengths to find area

Irregular Figures
Perimeter: just find the distance of all the
sides and add them all together.
Area: break the figure apart into rectangles
and triangles, find the area of each part, then
add the areas together.
