The two sources have a negative perspective of the legacies of

globalization on First Nation Peoples. In 1876 the Canadian Government

passed the Indian Act. This act made Indians, and the lands reserved for
Indians the responsibility of the Government. The act also defines who is
Indian and who is not. In 1879, a man that goes by the name Nicholas
Flood Davin issued a report, this report stated that he wanted First Nations
children to be separated from their families and communities. The
Government and churches respected his report. Later on a boarding school
was set up, this boarding schools goal was to educate and assimilate
Aboriginal children. This boarding school was also known as a Residential
School. Children were separated from their loved ones and were abused
physically, mentally, and sexually. The Canadian Government created
treaties and forced First nations to live on Government owned lands called
reserves. As years went on the Government and churches were realizing the
wrongs that they were undertaking. In 1998 the Federal Government issued
a Statement of Reconciliation. This statement was an official
acknowledgement of wrongs committed against Aboriginal Peoples, and a
pledge to address those wrongs. The First Nations Chief in source 1 is
accepting the apology, but is questioning on where his land is. In the other
source, the Prime Minister and First Nation man are walking and the Prime
Minister, Stephen Harper has his arm around the First Nations mans
shoulder and is saying Glad thats finally behind us It basically means that
he is content that the First Nations are accepting their apology and have no

choice but to move on from the past. They may be moving on from the past,
but the tragedy that had happened to them will stay with them forever and
they will never forget what happened to them. The Government apologizing
is not going to help things mentally; these Aboriginal People were abused at
a young age and had seen stuff that they shouldnt have. It is going to take a
lot for the First Nations to gladly accept their apologies.
I think that the Government should let the First Nations take control
over their own education because they basically lost all of their culture and
identity when they were sent to Residential Schools. It would be better to be
taught by someone who knows a lot about their culture, traditions, and
language, than to be taught by someone who doesnt know anything about
the culture. I also think that the Government should allow the First Nations
to Self-Govern themselves. Self-Government will increase their confidence as
well as improve their living conditions. It also gives Aboriginal People more
control, and hope for a better future.
