OUR PRODUCT: SOL HEIZEN

The Sol Heizen, a solar oven and stove top, is one of the most innovative
new products of technology. By harnessing the power of the sun, The Sol
Heizen makes the process of cooking, baking and boiling foods a simple
and economical home appliance value. Nine percent of low income
households in the United States sometimes do not have enough food to
eat because of lack of money.
Due to the high expenses of electric and gas bills, families have a lack of
finances to be able to provide the necessities for the family. With the use
of the solar oven, no fuel or gas is necessary. As a result, thousands of
dollars can be saved to further spend on food instead of appliance bills. If
more money can be spent on fresh foods that can be easily cooked, then
there is more opportunity for healthy lifestyles.

THESIS PAPER INFLUENCE

Allan Garza Thesis Paper: Classism as an Obstacle
His thesis paper talks about the limits of the lower-economic class in regards to
education. We took the idea of limits of the lower-economic class and researched
other limits the lower-economic class faces, such as health and fast food. The
influence was also from Barclay/ Hou's first semester exhibition about fast food
and how fast food markets target low-income families.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
PROBLEM: The problem we
are targeting is how low
income families struggle
with high appliance bills,
such as gas and electricity.
Having expensive bills, it
leaves less money for food.
Because there limited
money to be spent on food,
families resort in fast food
restaurants because of their
low prices. This ultimately
leads to obesity for both
children and adults.

PURPOSE
Feed low income families
Affordable materials
Fast food prevention

IMPACTS
Warm, healthy foods
Limits fast food consumptions
Less obesity

BENFITS
Less starvation within families
Lower bills (electric and gas)
More eating within the day

PSYCHOLOGY
Population: Our project targets low-income communities specifically, at the
start of our production, in New Mexico due to their poverty rates.
- Biological: Low-income communities are more susceptible to obesity and
health problems because they are resulting to fast food instead of home
cooked meals.
- Cognitive: Members of low-income communities resort to fast food rather
than home-cooked meals because it is more convenient and less timeconsuming
- Developmental: Kids will develop obesity and heart-rate problems if their
parents eat fast food

In the figure to the right, this graph

displays the poverty rates across the
regions during the 43 years span of 1969
to 2012. All of the regions, which insist of
Northeast, Midwest and West are mostly
scattered except South. This
demonstrates that the South has the
highest poverty rates. The South has had
the highest poverty rates through these
43 years, besides the 2 or 3 years that
the West slightly overlapped them.

J.S.

This figure demonstrates the

poverty rates in the Unites
States. As the colors get darker,
the higher the percentages are.
The darkest represents the states
that have 16.0% or more of
people living in poverty. By
analyzing the graph, we
conclude that the highest
percentages of people living in
poverty are in the South.

A.D.

The figure to the left lists the states in the Southern

Hemisphere and their percentages for poverty.
Excluding Puerto Rico, since it is not apart of the
U.S., the two states with the highest rates are
Mississippi and New Mexico.

SMALL TEST MARKET

Sample-test marketing for surveying purposes; 20 low-income
families of any race (elegibility: required to bear at least 1 child at
least 4 years or older) residing in Albuquerque, NM with given
consent to test the beta prototype ovens. They were given a trial
period of 30 days, excluding days without sun and a temperature
below 70 degrees. Families are required to use the oven everyday
for at least 1 meal until their oven is damaged, encounters a
problem or by the end of the 30-day period. In addition, they were
required to complete a daily log of meals cooked within the 30-day
trial period, the amount of time it took for the meal to cook in the
oven, and any problems and kinks encountered.
From the daily meal record logs and end survey/ ratings from
chosen family members, the feedback is used to find out the
problems, highlights, durability and improvement for the ovens.

COMPARISON TO SIMILAR
PRODUCTS
EASY BAKE
COST: $39.99
Started in 1963 and by 1997 more than 16 million Easy
Bake Ovens had been sold. In 2006, the popular oven was
inducted in the National Toy Hall of Fame.
RATING: 3.1/5
REVIWES: My girls and I did both included recipes this
weekend (complete with frosting and sparkles!). At ages
4.5 and 2.5 they are well below the recommended age for
this oven, but my older one was able to do most of the
steps with supervision and minimal assistance. You'll need
a pretty small bowl to stir up the mixes. The baking pan
and cupcake tray are included. Fortunately, the only other
required ingredient is water. Be careful not to put in too
much - it takes only a spoonful.
TARGET: 8 years and up

SUN SPOT SOLAR OVEN

COST: $59.99
RATING: 3/5 based on that 1 rating
REVIEW: Pros Effective
I used solar oven cooking frozen chicken. I put chicken in
cooking bag and cooked it from one o clock in afternoon until 5
pm adjusting solar cooker towards sun every half hour. Chicken
literally fell apart and was very hot even after being taken out
of sun for 30 mins. Excellent. -Miley54, parent living in North
Carolina whose primary subject is earth/ environmental science
BLURB: Students can cook without electricity\and without
polluting the atmosphere\using this special oven. Reflective
surfaces concentrate the sun's rays at the base of the unit. A
transparent top traps the heat in the oven, which on a sunny
day generates temperatures higher than 350 F. The instruction
guide explains how the solar oven works and contains recipes.
Oven flaps collapse for easy storage.
