information for
assignment work
Unit 5
January 2011
Learning outcomes
Describe 5 different sources of energy
and how they are used
Identify the role of three systems wihtin
energy metabolism
Explain what the body needs energy for
Develop knowledge to achieve
assignment based work o P4 ((M1,D1)
Energy Laws
Energy enables a structure or human
body to work, the capacity is how
much energy there is.
Law: Conservation of energy/
thermodynamics
Energy can be transformed
(chnaged from one for to another)
but cannot be created or destroyed

Forms of energy:
Re-cap from previous lesson:
name the main types of energy
researched.
Chemical is the most common
and used every day within the
human body
Heat, light, sound, kinetic,
electrical, sound. What does Solar
energy mean and why is it so
vital? Begins with a P!
Example of transformation
Place a lump of coal on a fire and as the
coal burns the chemical energy within it
is released and transformed into heat,
light and sometimes sound. The
chemical energy in the wood or coal has
come from the sun and the tree has
converted this into stored glucose.
Energy is released when chemical bonds
are broken .e. two atoms become one .
Obtaining energy
Without energy there is no activity in
anything, cars are driven by energy
from petrol, trains are moved by
electrical energy and we obtain energy
by eating fuel! i.e. food: carbohydrates,
fats and proteins.
Oxygen is also needed for the
combustion of fuel from the air which
produces waste produces CO2 and H2O.
Examples
Muscular activity: movement, coordination
Circulation of all bodily fluids
External and internal respiration
Growth and repair of the body
Nervous system functions: from simple
pain sensations to homeostasis
Developing complex molecules such as
enzymes and hormones and so much
more!
Review of assignment
support pack and task
work
We will now go through the task in
detail and review the learning
outcomes for the task and the lesson.
