    Gastric gavage/lavage is a process that involves delivering a nutrient solution through a nasal tube to a person who cannot eat or will not eat (gavage), or washing out the stomach (lavage). It can be used to remove ingested substances from the stomach to decrease absorption, empty the stomach after an endoscopic procedure, or diagnose and treat gastric hemorrhage. However, it is contraindicated after ingestion of acids, alkalis, hydrocarbons, petroleum distillates or strong corrosive agents due to the dangers it could pose.

    PURPOSE
    For urgent removal of ingested substance to decrease systemic
    absorption
    To empty the stomach after endoscopic procedure
    To diagnose gastric hemorrhage and to rest hemorrhage.

    CONTRAINDICATIONS
    After acid or alkali ingestion
    Seizure
    After ingestion of hydrocarbon or petroleum distillates
    Dangerous after ingestion of strong corrosive agent
