N.2 - Explain how a firewall could be used to secure the data in a computer
connected to the internet

A firewall monitors the incoming data to a network. It is used to prevent hackers
accessing a computer or network using the internet by blocking traffic from
external networks. It can also be used to block virus hacking your network.
N.3 - Schools are concerned with the possibility that students are using the
schools internet connections to access undesirable sites. Name and describe two
security methods the schools could use to prevent this from happening. (4
marks)
Method 1: Firewall
Description: To prevent hackers accessing a computer or network using the
internet.
Method 2: Proxy Server
Description: It can be used to filter and monitor web traffic.
N.5 Name three network devices and for each one describe what it does. (6
marks)
Name: Hub
Description: It is the centre of a network that broadcasts packets to all
computers connected.
Name: Switch
Description: It is used to physically connect devices together. It sends packets by
doing a packet inspection and sending it to the IP address.
Name: Router
Description: A router sends packets to computers connected to the network. It
finds the best path for the packet to take using the internet.

NC2 Describe four advantages to business of using email to send messages to
other businesses rather than using a fax machine.
1. On an email you can send higher quality documents as a fax is very low
quality.
2. An email will send a document quicker than a fax.
3. You can save money on paper.
4. You can reply without having to send a document whereas on a fax you
would have to send a document with your reply.
