Motivation

Conventional wireless networking paradigm

To meet the growing capacity demands in cellular networks imposed by the

increasing customer base and data-hungry mobile applications.

Multiple antennas appear to be the major contending technology for

increasing the spectral efficiency of wireless networks.

Having exhausted their potential in a standalone fashion (at the level of a

single link or single cell), multiple antennas are now explored for further
capacity.

Key Idea

To bring distributed multi-antenna wireless access to reality by combining two
powerful emerging technologies:

Radio Remote Heads (RRHs), which allow for widely geographically

distributed access via radio-over-fibre connections to a central base station.

Electronically Steerable Passive Array Radiators (ESPARs), which provide

multi-antenna-like functionality with a single active RF chain only
