Patterns and Relations

Teacher

General
Learning
Outcomes:

Patterns
Identify, create, describe and translate numerical and non-numerical patterns
arising from experiences in the school and playground

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

Relations
Demonstrate and explain the meaning of equality and inequality, concretely and
pictorially
Record equalities and inequalities symbolically, using the equal symbol and not
equal symbol
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Patterns
1. Sort Objects and shapes, using one or two attributes
2. Identify attributes and rules in presorted sets
3. Identify and describe patterns, including numerical and non-numerical patterns
4. Create, extend, and describe patterns, including numerical and non-numerical
patterns
Translate patterns from one mode to another: manipulatives, diagrams, charts,
calculators, words, symbols
Relations
5. Identify the meaning of equality and inequality, concretely and pictorially
6. Classify equalities and inequalities symbolically, using the equal symbol and not
equal symbol

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Sorting
Students will:
1. Demonstrate how to categorize and sort objects and shapes
2. Identify differences and similarities between objects and shapes
Patterns
Students will:
1. Classify sequences of elements as patterns or non-patterns
2. Identify patterns both numerical and non-numerical
3. Describe patterns both numerical and non-numerical
Relations
Students will:
1. Identify the meaning of equality and inequality, concretely and pictorially
2. Record equalities and inequalities symbolically, using the equal symbol and not equal symbol

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Can students
Sort items be a specific attribute of their choosing (S-LO#1)
Identify the differences and similarities they used (S-LO#2)
Recognize a sequence of elements as pattern or non-pattern (PLO#1)

Adapted from a template created by Dr. K. Roscoe

Lesson Plan Template ED 3501 (Version C)

Translate Patterns from numerical to other mediums (P- LO#2)
Describe patterns both numerical and non-numerical (P- LO#3)
Recognize when pan balances are equal or unequal (R-LO#1)
Know how to use the symbols to represent relationships (R-LO#2)

Key Questions:

Products/Performan
ces:

Are you an expert at sorting, patterns and equal/unequal?

Can you extend, translate and identify the core of a pattern?
Can you choose attributes to sort items by?

Review Booklet- Do they consistently show understanding in each of the

three areas?

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

Pan Balances
Unifix Cubes
Different weighted objects
Ladybugs
Crayons

Glue

PROCEDURE
Prior to lesson

Attention Grabber

Locate Pan Balances

Make review booklet
Find objects of different weights to use in pan balance
Set up three stations
Assign groups- Randomizer

Introduction
Math Term
Work on two pages from the term test

Assessment of Prior
Knowledge

Ok today we are going to move around three centers to fill in

your math expert logbooks.
Can someone explain how we:
Sort items?
Recognize patterns? Predict the next elements?
Know if items are equal or unequal on the balances?

Expectations for
Learning and
Behaviour

Students will:
Respectful of the materials and each other
Try to answer all questions on your own
Make sure to ask a teacher if you are confused

Advance
Organizer/Agenda

On board:
1- Sorting-Ladybugs
2- Patterns- Fill in and identify core
3- Pan Balances- Make items equal

Transition to Body

Today we are completing our patterns and relations review.

Time
10

We will have three different stations. Show them the Review

booklet and give instructions for each station
Groups will be:

Learning Activity #2

Body
Sorting-Ladybugs
Students will be given a worksheet with three sections
They will Sort the ladybugs (there are multiple ways- Color
of wings, size or color of spots)
They will glue the bugs into the appropriate section
Label each section with their criteria (ie, black spots, red
spots..)
ASSESSMENT: Are the students able to identify similarities and
differences among the ladybugs? Can they articulate why they
sorted them this way?
Patterns: Fill in and Identify Core
Students will be given two worksheets, each with a
different pattern
For pattern 1: extend the arrow pattern following the rule
you are given, create a new pattern that follows the same
pattern rule
For pattern 2: Fill in the missing element, write out the
pattern rule, create a new pattern that follows the same
pattern rule
Circle the core of each pattern

Teacher Notes:
Assessments/
Differentiation

ASSESSMENT: Do students logbooks show an understanding of

extending, translating and classification on both patterns?

Learning Activity #3

Relations- Make items equal

Students will each have a pan balance
They will place two different objects on either side of the
balance
They will record if they are equal or unequal in the first
box
If they are unequal they will add unifix blocks to the
appropriate side to make them equal and record how
many it took to balance the items

Learning:

ASSESSMENT: Do students records show the ability to represent
the relationship between various items? Is their evidence that
they understand how to make items equal?
Closure
It has been so great to learn all about patterns, sorting and
equal/unequal with you. Thank you for filling in your review
books so I can see just how much you learned.

Feedback From
Students:

Before students hand in their review book they will be asked to

put a 1-5 on the front to show how confident they felt about their
answers.
Answers in review book will show if they are able to achieve all
of the learn objectives

Feedback To
Students

Teacher will review answers and if there are any class wide
issues with specific questions they can be looked over as class.
Individual answers will be looked at for correctness and any
confusion cleared up with students in a one-on-one manner

Transition To Next
Lesson

Now that we are all done with this section we will be moving
onto Shape and Space. We will be looking at how to read a
calendar (which you should all know about) and identifying
shapes.
