Ashford 5: - Week 4 - Discussion 1

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to
respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the
depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how
your discussion will be evaluated.

Segmenting and Pre-training

0 responses

Describe the segmenting and pre-training principles. Evaluate which learners would benefit
most from pre-training. Finally, briefly describe a pre-training exercise for your JIT lesson and
why you believe it will benefit those learners who need it most.
Segmenting
Lesson activities with complex content can provide a basis for learning that does not
cram information into the learners brain. One may think of it as chopped liver as the meal is

easier to digest (consume) if broken down in portions. In the context of instructional design,
segmenting allows instructors/students stages of learning that culminate to an entire lesson.
One could omit parts of a lesson in order to lessen potential cognitive overload;
however, the lesson would lose some accuracy. Breaking the lesson into segments; however,
enables instruction delivery into successions of steps that together compose the whole lesson
(Mayer and Clark, 2011). Thus, segmenting the lesson into parts that equal to a entire lesson is a
new instructional design technique for teaching complex content to learners who may not be
familiar with the subject.
Pre-training
With pre-training learners are provided with a brief overview of important concept of the
lesson prior to doing the actual lesson activity. Just as with the segmenting principle it relieves
some of the cognitive load. However, the load is lesson through an activity that is preliminary to
the lesson. It reminds me of studying the table of contents of a book in order to get an overall
idea of the thrust of the book before reading chapter by chapter.. In e-learning environments
learners solve electronics troubleshooting challenges better if they received pertinent information
regarding the subject before attempting the actual problem-solving (Mayer and Clark, 2011). Elearners and to an extent any learners who have very little and/or no knowledge of the content of
the lesson may benefit most because pre-training gives them a head start on the lesson.
For the JIT lesson of using Web 2.0 tools to communicate/collaborate on lesson
planning/activities the pre-training would be to provide learners with the features of Skype,
Facebook, Wiki and Blogging; thus, learning to absorb the characteristics of the web 2.0 tools
before actually creating accounts and using them for class would alleviate some of the burden on
the student cognitive capacity before the lesson actually commences.

Ashford 5: - Week 4 - Discussion 2

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to
respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the
depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how
your discussion will be evaluated.

Worked Examples

0 responses

Worked examples are step-by-step demonstrations of how to perform a task or solve a problem
and can be invaluable to the learning process. For this discussion, create a JIT learning activity
that instructs others on how to do something you already know (e.g., long division, origami,
tying shoe laces) utilizing worked examples. Post your example to the discussion forum, either as
a link or as an attachment.

Ashford 5: - Week 4 - Journal

Reflections on Readings
Reflect on your readings this week and describe at least three take-away concepts. Explain each
concept, where you learned about it, and how it relates to e-learning and just-in-time
training/learning. Finally, examine how each concept might be applied, either in your current or
future career.
Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your journal
entry.

Ashford 5: - Week 4 - Assignment

Exploring the Effectiveness of Practice Activities

The textbook describes six principles that ought to be applied to practice exercises, in order to
make them effective in learning. Select three of these principles to examine in more depth, and
address the following items for each principle.

Identify and describe the principle

Explain how the principle can impact learning when applied

Describe the challenges associated with incorporating the principle into a JIT
training/learning activity (i.e., either in the workplace or academic setting)

Examine the risks associated with failing to incorporate the principles

Describe at least one example that illustrates how practice can be applied to JIT
training/learning, including any technology associated with this application

Support your responses with references from the textbook and at least one additional scholarly
resource. Your paper must be in APA format and be three to four pages in length.
Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your
assignment.
