ABSTRACT
SILVA, Robinson. KAYAP HANDICRAFT: Historical and social aspects of
Indian artifacts marketing. A case study in Moikarak, Par Monograph
(Graduation in History) - Faculdade Integrada Brasil Amaznia, Belm, 2011.
This wok reports a study on indigenous handicrafts made in a MebengokreKayap village in southern Para, from the production of artifacts to their
marketing in urban centers. We studied historical and social aspects of
Moikarak village, including the current difficulties facing the village to sell
the artifacts produced within a perspective of income generation. The
results were obtained in a three weeks fieldwork in Moikarak. During this
period, we used the participant observation methodology, video recording
and photography of all artifacts production process. In addition, records
were also obtained in several events held in urban centers, such as the X
National Indigenous Games in the Paragominas City, 2009 and in the
exhibition "Mebngkre nh Pyka" (Our Mebngkre Land), 2009. We
verified that trade of artifacts among Mebngkre occurs since late
nineteenth century. The study highlighted only three specifics categories of
objects: necklace, bracelet, and stick hair, considered important by the
community. The records range from the collection of raw materials in the
forest or the village to the different selling strategies in urban place.
Interestingly, we found evidence of technical innovation in the processing of
raw materials and the shapes of objects, and the organization of labor
between men and women. The three main difficulties that indigenous people
have found to sell their artifacts are: 1) the distances between villages and
urban centers, 2) deficiency of transport infrastructure and lack of outlets.
Adding to all this, there is also 3) lack of specific public policies to promote
the practice of trading in Indian handicrafts.
