1. Explain the meaning of the U.N. emblem.


The olive branches symbolize peace and the world means everyone in the world.
2. How many countries are members of the U.N. today? 193
3. How might you describe the U.N. General Assembly? What happens when it convenes?
Its a meeting where the countries of the UN meet and discuss policies and world issues.
When it convenes each country has one vote and they elect a president for each session.
4. Does the General Assemblys vote matter? Why or why not?
Yes because every country has a vote no matter how big or small it is.
5. What is unique about the U.N.s headquarters?
It is located in New York and the land was given to the UN and is not part of the US any more

The main goal of the UN is to make the world a better place.
7. Identify at least two challenges that exist in following the U.N. principles.
Sometimes the countries might not work well with each other. The have to try to keep the
world at peace and that can be challenging.
8. What was the League of Nations, and how does it relate to the U.N.?
The league of nations was a group of countries that tried to solve disputes across the world.
This relates to the UN because that is what the UN does.
9. In what ways was the League of Nations an example of early globalization? Identify at least
two.
They are an early example of globalization because they tried to make the world change to be
more peacefull.
10.Why did the League of Nations fail? Identify at least two reasons.
They failed because countries in it did not follow the rules they made. Another reason they
failed is because they did nothing about it when a country attacked another or broke a rule in
the league of nations.

13.Why might the League of Nations be considered the forerunner of the United Nations?
They are considered the forerunner because the UN has the same goal as the league of
nations but the UN actually carries out the rules they make.

14.What is the U.N.s Security Council, and what countries are involved in it?
Cause it was based on the same idea and the countries coming together.
15.Why might the structure and operation of the Security Council be problematic? In other
words, what principle does it appear to violate? Identify two issues. They have the right to
veto and only certain countries control it.
16.Who is the newest U.N. member, and what noteworthy nations are not members of the U.N.?
Why has U.N. membership grown?
Montenegro. Members not in the U.N- Taiwan.
17.How is the U.N. funded? The department relies on funding through the regular UN budget and
through additional voluntary donor contribution.

The leader is Ban Ki-Moon from South Korea. Where he comes from could result in issues.
3. What do you feel is the future of the U.N.? Does it have a place in todays world? Why or why
not? What can it do to improve its position? Write a 5-6 sentence paragraph explaining
your views.
I feel that the UNs future is going to be very effective and strong to everyone. I think what
they try to do is beneficial and could help a lot. I believe that the UN does have a place in the

world today. I think this because the world is still messed up and they could help fix it.
Something you could do is expand the countries that are a part of the UN.
