Teaching/Leading in Poverty
6

Definitions of Generational vs. Situational Poverty

Poverty as other situations often are relative i.e. if everyone you
know is like you or have the same experiences, differences are
vague at best, ignorance of the rest of the world
Language and experience deficits during the years before schooling
in generational poverty result in cognitive structures to not be fully
developed. This has nothing to do with IQ but is largely
environmental. (Ex. plan-predict-cause and effect-consequencesimpulsivity-anti social behavior-criminal behavior)
Relationships that lead to trust building from birth are the most
significant motivators for children of poverty or abuse.
All children possess currency and gifts. It is up to you to
determine what they are, create success and build confidence and a
positive self image in that child. (Ex. emotional, mental, physical,
support system, role models, and other internal and external assets.)
