1. What is a word splash? A word splash is a collection of words that the
students have shouted out or have collected in a smaller group listed about any subject. Once you have the list of words the can be arranged in to a shape or patterns that is interesting to look at. 2. Purpose of activity: To evaluate the knowledge of your students. 3. This exercise can be used in elementary, middle, high school and even in higher education. 4. You can use any text for this exercise, you can use this with any subject matter as well. 5. Word splash are a fun exercise that can be used as: A pre-assessment and a post-assessment of a lesson or unit. It can serve as a visual representation of what the student have learned. A quick check to see if the homework assignment was successful. A way to stimulate conversation about a subject. A parting summery of the days lesson. There are two ways to construct a word Splash: One way is to collect the words in a list and to either construct it on the computer (word, photo shop, illustrater or any other software that you can manipulate the direction of the text) there is website (www.wordle.net/create ) that can create word splashes as well if you enter the word list in to them and print it out yourself offer the task up for extra credit. The second is to use a large pad of paper and markers to construct it by hand as the students call out the words. (This way can be a little touch and go but it is a way to get it up fast for the students to see their accumulative knowledge on any given subject)
6. Adaptions suggestions: Since this is primarily a shout out activity there
is no need for adaptation for SPED or ELS students. 7. Strengths: Versatile since it can be used in any subject and with any content.
