Senior Research
Spring 2014
3 Semester Hours

Course Description: Senior research is a course designed to give upper level students in natural
sciences the opportunity to conduct research under the mentorship and guidance of an on-campus
faculty scientists.
Course Objectives: The major goal of this course is to discuss, in details, basic principles
related to conducting research, investigating scientific questions, and application of the scientific
method.
Class Attendance Policy: Class attendance is mandatory at Albany State University.
Attendance begins the first day of class and all students are expected to remain in class for the
entire class period unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Absenteeism
cannot exceed the credit hours for the course. Excessive absences may result in the instructor
lowering the grade earned by one letter grade e.g. A to B or D to F. (NOTE: This
includes excused and unexcused absences.)
While class will meet periodically to discuss progress of projects, the allotted time for class
should be spent with the individual mentor for each student.
Children and other individual who are not enrolled in the course are not permitted in the lecture
or laboratory rooms.
Grade Composition: Grades will be composed of three components: a written paper discussing
and describing the research project in question, a presentation summarizing the research project,
attendance to journal club and seminar attendance, and an assessment from the faculty mentor.
The weights of each component are as follows:
Research paper/article:

Faculty Assessment:
20%
Journal Club/Seminar Attendance 10%
