Checking ignition system


Checking and adjusting ignition point
Special tools and workshop equipment required
VAS 5051 with VAS 5051/1 and VAS
5051/2
or
V.A.G 1551 with V.A.G 1551/1

V.A.G 1767
or
V.A.G 1367 with V.A.G 1367/8
Note:
Ignition point is only to be adjusted if a
deviation is found when checking idling speed
=> Page 24-22.
Test sequence

With ignition switched off, connect up


ignition tester V.A.G 1767 (or V.A.G
1367).
=> Operating instructions
Notes:
Take particular care to ensure that TDC
sender of ignition tester V.A.G 1367 is
fully inserted in gearbox housing.
Ignition point is displayed directly on

V.A.G 1767 (or V.A.G 1367). There is no


need to aim timing light at ignition point
notches.
Interrogate and erase fault memory =>
Page 01-8.

Start basic setting=>Page 01-28, Display group

Maintain engine speed at 2000 ... 2500
rpm and read off ignition point on ignition tester
V.A.G 1767 (or V.A.G 1367).

Test specification: 4 ... 8 before TDC


Note:
If ignition point displayed is outside tolerance, it
must be adjusted prior to checking idling speed
whilst system is still set to "Basic setting 0".
Adjust ignition point by turning ignition
distributor.
-Setting 6 1 before TDC
Leave engine idling.
Press key.
Ignition point may fluctuate in
range 2 ... 10 before TDC
After adjusting ignition point, check idling
speed => Page 24-22.
