Unit Activity

Badminton

Unit Context

Learner Characteristics: 80-100 high school students, grouped into

classes of 12-24. Developmental level consists of different skill sets and
learning curves. Student abilities will vary based on previous experience
and concepts learned from watching and/or playing the game. Students
are competitive students, so motivation throughout the unit should be
high.
Physical Environment: Five to Six modified badminton courts.
Hardwood floor, bleachers pushed in, dotted lines outlining each court,
and padding on the walls. The physical environment is in great condition,
and students will be cautioned as to the safety of being around the metal
poles.
Equipment Access: Equipment will be accessible through the
equipment closet. Each student will have a racket and at least one birdie
per court. Each court will have a net, so based on class size, there will
be anywhere from 3-6 nets. All equipment is in good condition and will
be fully functional during all activities.
Special Concerns: Safety is the main priority during activities. Make
sure all students have proper footwear (tennis shoes). Be sure students
are aware of their designated area so they dont run into walls, nets, or
each other. Allow enough space between activities and nets. Also make
sure students stay in control of their bodies keeping hands to
themselves. Fighting will not be tolerated.

Small Groups: Students will be put into small groups and asked to
complete a task as a group, which will help incorporate team work and
cooperation.
Peer Teaching: Students may be asked to help one of their peers who

Assessment
Procedures

Psychomotor: Throughout the semester serve, smash, clear, and drop

shot will be broken down into critical elements. Students will practice
these skills alone and with other students, and then will be assessed
with a game or fun competition at the end of class. At the end of the unit,
students will play in a doubles competition to assess their overall
understanding of the tactics and skills learned throughout the unit.
Cognitive: As each new skill is taught, students will be informed of the
critical elements for each skill. At the end of the unit, students will be
given a written examination on the critical elements of the skills and the
rules and strategies of badminton.
Affective: Throughout the semester students will be assessed on
absences, tardiness, and attitude during class. If the students fail to
follow any of these affective behaviors, 1 or 2 points will be taken off of
their participation grade. This will help build charisma and team bonding,
learning that students depend on one another, as all team players do in
badminton.
Health-Related Fitness: Throughout the semester students will engage
in Fitness tasks on a daily basis to achieve MVPA of at least 50% during
class. Students will assessed on this at the end of the semester during a
fitness challenge

Reflection

I think that overall this unit went very well. The students really enjoyed
the game of badminton thoroughly, and I learned a lot. During this unit I
slowly became more comfortable teaching and demonstrating the skills
to the students, and by the end I was able to teach the full lesson without
thinking twice. The only thing I wish was different was that we had more
time. Most of the classes were able to get through the tournament, but
my two biggest classes werent, and I know they were disappointed.
They all really wanted to play every team in the class, so if I were to
teach this unit again, I would probably have a 4 week unit instead of a 3
week unit. Other than that, I think it went really well and I would be
happy to teach a badminton unit again.
