THURSDAY, MARCH 5
WNY Drilling Defense Community Meeting
6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Crane Branch Library
633 Elmwood Avenue
Buffalo, New York 14222
Every week trains loaded with volatile crude oil fracked in North Dakota's Bakken shale travel through New York communities at 30 to
40 miles an hour. The DOT-111 tankers used to haul oil are defective and prone to explode in derailments. Bakken oil trains from North
Dakota are traveling across New York State and through the City of Buffalo.
With very little public awareness and no study of environmental impacts, the oil industry has made New York a dangerous pipeline for
crude oil that snakes thousands of miles by rail, barge and ship from oil fields in North Dakota and elsewhere, to refineries on both
coasts. Because they present an immediate danger to public health, we must work to halt the transport of oil trains. Join us in stopping the
bomb trains!
We will also be discussing next steps in the anti-fracking campaign in New York, including increased focus on renewable energy. These
meetings are open to all!

7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Buffalo State College
Bulger Communications Center, North (1st floor)
1300 Elmwood Ave. Buffalo, NY
Jon Bowermaster is the filmmaker of influential music-protest film Dear Governor Cuomo, which played a role in moving Governor
Andrew Cuomo to act against fracking in New York State. In his new film, "Dear President Obama: Americans Against Fracking In One
Voice, Bowermaster takes on President Barack Obama with a national look at the issue of fracking. The film profiles the victims of
fracking across the U.S., speaks with experts on the topic, and takes a look at alternative energy sources gaining traction around the
globe.
Following the film will be a Q&A session with Bowermaster, as well as representatives from local organizations, who will bring Western
New Yorkers up to speed on what's transpired in the state since the Cuomo administration's decision to ban fracking on December 17 th.

TUESDAY, APRIL 9

Amherst Against Fracking Meeting

6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Williamsville Public Library
5571 Main Street
Williamsville, NY
In April 2014 the Town Board of Amherst passed a resolution stating that they'd pass a local law that prohibited fracking and fracking
waste from entering Amherst, but have yet to follow up on their word. Almost 200 cities and towns across NY have stepped up to protect
their residents from fracking by passing local measures, and now it's time for the Amherst Town Board to do the same. A town-wide ban
on fracking & fracking waste disposal, including road spreading, would protect residents from exposure to harmful chemicals, heavy
metals, and even radioactivity in fracking waste.
While it is a great victory that NYS recently banned fracking, Amherst Against Fracking still finds it imperative that this local law be
passed in full. New York's fracking ban does not protect the Town of Amherst from the various fracking wastes being spread on roads,
mishandled in treatment facilities, and other risky disposal processes. This is a huge loophole in current state regulation and wastes from
places like Ohio and Pennsylvania are already crossing our borders.

ARTICLE: License To Dump (Environmental Advocates Of New York: February 2015)
...[We are]...pleased to share Environmental Advocates Of New York's new report, 'License To Dump,' which details the dangerous
practice of letting Pennsylvania dump its toxic fracking waste inside our landfills.
We applaud [New York State] Governor [Andrew] Cuomo and his administration for following the science on fracking and announcing
a ban based on its public health and environmental impacts. However, if fracking is too dangerous for New York, then certainly other
states fracking waste is too dangerous for New York.
Fracking wastes are notoriously toxic and radioactive. We encourage the Cuomo Administration as they develop the final ban
language to ensure that the dangers of fracking waste are considered, and announce an 'emergency' rule-making to begin the process of
closing loopholes within state regulations that allow fracking waste to be classified as construction debris rather than the toxic
byproduct it is....

RENEWABLE ENERGY (AE)
************************************
Repowering the Dunkirk Coal Plant and Cayuga Coal Plant With Renewable Energy
The fact that coal is a dangerous fossil fuel for human health and the climate coupled with the cheap natural gas is forcing coal plant
operators to close their plants, or curtail energy production. New York State's Public Service Commission held hearings on what to do
with the Dunkirk Coal Plant (Dunkirk NY) and the Cayuga Coal Plant (near Lansing NY on the shores of beautiful Cayuga Lake, just
north of Ithaca).
Only two choices were presented by the Public Service Commission: repower with natural gas or shut down the plants and improve
transmission lines into both areas. The global warming potential of methane is about 90 times that of CO 2 (Howarth: Climatic Change
106:679-690 (2011)).
Hence New York State's Public Service Commission is seriously considering an option (methane) that would enhance the global
warming.
The WNY Peace Center's Renewable Energy Task Force offered a third alternative: repower both with renewable energy by creating two
large solar parks: one at the old Seneca Army Depot (between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes) -- the other at the Dunkirk Coal plant itself.

EmPower NY
EmPower is a NYSERDA program for low-income individuals to obtain free professional energy services to reduce their energy usage
and costs. If they are approved for the program, families can receive up to $7000 worth of no-cost home energy work, including energyefficient appliance replacement, furnace updates and insulation.
EmPower New York is now accepting applications for no-cost energy efficiency services to low-income households. If your household
meets eligibility requirements, you may be approved for free energy services provided by a licensed home improvement agency.
Improvements may include replacement of old light bulbs, refrigerators, dryers and freezers with new energy-efficient models, or
insulation and air sealing may be provided to keep more heat in the home. Contractors also test your home for gas leaks and carbon
monoxide which can be dangerous if undetected.
EmPower NY is a NYSERDA program and is available to renters or owners who live in buildings of 100 units or less and make 60% or
less of the median NY state income.

This is the last thing we need. These wars are not making us safer but generating enemies. They are not surgical operations, but mass
killings, as well as assaults on the natural environment and the public budget not to mention excuses for curtailing civil liberties.
