Personal Code of Ethics and Beliefs Assignment
Using the leadership instruments and information shared in class
as a foundation; write a concise statement (1-2 sentences) of
belief for each of the following topics:
1. Purpose of K-12 education: To provide students with an
environment where they can thrive and develop their
talents, while preparing them to be productive and
successful members of society. Education should equally
focus on the efforts to create lifelong learners.
2. Beliefs regarding students: That all students regardless of
ability can be successful if provided with the necessary tools,
resources and support. For students to be most successful
they must take ownership for their own education and be
advocates for their learning.
3. Beliefs regarding parents: Parents are an integral and
essential part of the education system, acting as advocates
for their children, school and community. Communication
lines must remain open and easily accessible; they are an
asset that cannot go unused.
4. Beliefs about the characteristics and behaviors of good
teachers: Teachers must demonstrate a willingness to
improve, change, and reflect on their practice in the
interests of students. Developing strong relationships is the
key for any teacher who aims to see sustained growth within
their classroom.
5. What teachers need to be effective: A coaching model of
evaluation that identifies areas for growth, provides
opportunities for dialogue and discussion, and offers
continuous support and resources to enhance current
instructional strategies.

6. What motivates teachers: The light bulb moment they

witness firsthand when a student who was struggling makes
a connection, learns a new skill, or discovers something
about themselves.
7. Most effective instructional methods: Methods that consider
the culture, values and beliefs of a population, have
research-based evidence to support their success, and
emphasize the development of life skills.
8. An effective classroom environment that enhances student
learning: fosters trust, honesty, and community while
challenging students to think independently, be creative and
improve on a daily basis.
9. What I need to be an effective school leader: I benefit from
an environment with open lines of communication where
colleagues feel safe sharing their knowledge, ideas, and
concerns. I also need to be surrounded by individuals with
varying strengths who understand their role within a
leadership group.
10. My strengths and weaknesses that may affect my leadership
abilities: My leadership strengths include organization,
attention to detail, and a passion for assisting others. I need
to improve my communication skills, be willing to delegate
responsibilities, and utilize resources when I become
overwhelmed.
