Attendance Policies and Procedures

Daily attendance is mandatory. There are severe consequences for truancy, tardiness, and
cuts. Students are expected to attend every class every day because good attendance is

necessary for academic success. Missing any classes without cause is considered truancy
and subject to disciplinary action. Parents/Guardians are contacted for every absence.
Excused Absences
Upon returning to school, the student is to bring a note signed by either parent or legal
guardian stating the students full name, date, and specific reason for absence. The school
will determine the validity of the absence. The student is responsible for arranging make
up work with their teacher. The only valid causes for absences are the following:
Extreme Illness
Observance of Religious Holiday
Death in the immediate family
Family emergency
WIC Appointments with documentation
Doctors appointments with documentation
Other situations will be handled on a case by case basis
Extended Absences
An extended absence of more than three days requires parents to notify the counselor.
Documentation supporting need for absence is required.
Early Dismissal
Students must be picked up by a parent or legal guardian if an early dismissal is required.
Students cannot be released on their own. If you are 18 or older, permission from a parent
or guardian is still required.
School Functions
Students participating in school activities must receive permission from their classroom
teachers prior to the event. The class teacher must sign an official field trip/permission slip.
A teacher may refuse to grant permission if the student is not meeting class requirements
at the time of the function. Students must be in Simpson attire in order to participate on a
field trip unless otherwise indicated.
Activities Eligibility
In order to participate in school activities including field trips, school events, sports teams,
clubs, and organizations, students must meet the following requirements :
No more than 2 disciplinary infractions a month
Minimum of 75% monthly attendance
No more than 2 phone/electronic tickets (cell phone, iPods) in a month
No more than 1 unserved detention
No more than 1 failing grade
Students who are ineligible to participate in school activities will report to their regular
classes.

Contact Information
Students and parents are required to keep the school informed of any change in name,
address, or phone number throughout the school year. An emergency contact is required
for each student in case of emergency.
Discipline Code
Simpson follows the Chicago Public School systems Code of Conduct. Each Simpson
student receives a copy of the Code of Conduct. Please see document if you have
questions or concerns.
Respect of Property
Vandalizing, marking, or theft of school or personal property will result in arrest and severe
disciplinary action pursuant to Chicago Public School policy. Students are not allowed to
have any of the following in school: permanent or semi-permanent markers, spray paint,
liquid paper, or related items. Anyone defacing property will automatically be required to
pay for the clean up and restoration of the defaced property.
Electronics
Students are forbidden to use the following during class periods: cell phones, CD players,
MP3 players or iPods, gaming systems, or any related items. If any of the above
electronics are seen during class periods, students will receive an Electronics Ticket
resulting in a one-day ban. Any student receiving three Electronic Tickets within a week
will be issued a one-week electronics ban.
If a student is placed on a one-week ban due to policy violation, a parent/legal guardian
will be required to pick up the electronic item at the end of the week. Simpson is not
responsible for any loss or damage of any personal electronic equipment.
Student Lunchroom Expectations
1. Simpson has a closed campus. Students are not permitted to exit the building at
any time during the school day.
2. All tables, chairs and surrounding areas must be left clean.
3. Students are not permitted to leave the lunchroom for any reason, unless a pass
has been issued.
4. Students are not allowed to sit on the lunch tables.
5. All food must be eaten in the lunchroom.
Simpson High School Health Center
Rush Health Center at Simpson provides primary care, dental and mental health services

appointment, students are required to notify the classroom teacher with an appointment
slip prior to their appointment. Without an appointment, students will only be permitted to
go to the clinic in case of true medical emergency.
