Water Conservation

Water conservation involves trying to reduce the amount of water used, rather than increasing supply, vital
as water is finite and therefore probably more sustainable.
This can be done in different ways:

1. Agriculture

More efficient irrigation stop doing flood irrigation as it is wasteful

Drip irrigation and spray technology should be used
Fertigration has been used in the US and Israel

2. Government policies

Rising water prices and the introduction of water meters

Conserve wetland environments so saving more water

3. Industry

Recycling water and reusing it

4. Settlements

Bedzed almost all water falling here is collected and reused. All appliances used are done to
water efficient
Dongtan, China have 2 water systems going into homes, 1 for drinking water and 1 with grey
water for gardens and toilets

5. Education

In Stigomta, Sweden, they hold an annual 'Pee Outside Day' which saves 50 percent of the water
normally used to flush a toilet.
17th April in US have pee outside day, started in Atlanta in 2007
Slogans if its brown flush it down, if its yellow let it mellow

6. Domestic

Shorten your showers by 1-2 minutes
Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth
When washing the dishes by hand dont leave the water running
Put only full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher
Keep a bottle of drinking water in the fridge, rather than running the tap to get cold water
